Do Animals Dream?: Children's Questions about Animals Most Often Asked of the Natural History Museum

by Joyce Pope

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The title of the book is but one question that children often ask about animals. As Information Officer of the Zoology Department at the British Museum of Natural History, Pope ought to know. An engaging, convenient question-and-answer format provides clear explanations of how animals might dream, ``find their way'' during migration and communicate. However, some of the answers aren't entirely satisfying. After a cursory mention of the ways in which alligators and crocodiles differ, Pope discusses the habits of the latter at length, with hardly a nod to the king of the sports shirt. And she neatly avoids the messy complications of animals eating each other by pointing out the necessity of the food chain and the transfer of proteins. Still, this book will cure some of the frustration parents feel when they don't have ready answers for their ever-curious young ones. (All ages)

Gr 3-6 Pope answers children's questions about animals, such as, ``Do fish drink?'' and ``Do animals talk to each other?'' Up to two pages are devoted to each questionorganized by topicand the accompanying answers are short, thorough, and easily understood. Numerous black-and-white (and some color) illustrations and diagrams not only clarify the answers and examples, but are also a major contribution to the great visual appeal of this book. This will certainly be an appealing book for children to pore through, and while similar to Charlie Brown's Super Book of Questions and Answers about Kinds of Animals from Snails to People (Random, 1976) edited by Hedda Nussbaum, these questions are more thoroughly answered and these illustrations more germane to the subject matter. Books of this type are not very useful for school reports, but Do Animals Dream? is packed with fascinating information and will be a source of enjoyment for nature lovers. Cynthia M.
