Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This nonfiction picture book in the "Animals All Around" series, firsts asks if crocodiles dance. The following page answers the question: "No! Crocodiles bask in the sun." A paragraph at the bottom of the page explains that crocodiles soak up heat from the sun to keep their bodies warm by basking in the sun in the morning. The text proceeds in the same manner, asking if lions, elephants, flamingos, wolves, rhinos, raccoons, sea otters, and dolphins dance. Some further information about each animal is given after each "no" answer. The last question, "Do bees Dance?" is answered with "Yes! Bees dance." The short paragraph explains how bees appear to dance when they find a source of food. A page at the end of the text, "Why Animals Have Different Habits," groups one sentence facts from the text into categories, such as habits that help animals stay warm or cool, etc. The last page provides a short glossary, bibliography, website, and index. The illustrations, created digitally, are bright and simple. Children will enjoy the question-and-answer format, and the facts about each animal should keep their interest and stimulate their curiosity.
