Party procrastinators need no longer hesitate-this cookbook/party planner removes the guesswork and anxiety from throwing their own shindig. Along with food stylist Cindie Flannigan and cookbook author Martha Hopkins (InterCourses), Vivaldo, a professional caterer for more than 20 years, has designed nine full menus for 12, 25, 50, and 75 guests. Menu themes include "Asian Inspiration," "Arabian Nights," and "On-the-Beach Luau," with dishes ranging from Egg Rolls with Sweet and Sour Sauce to Marrakech Chicken, all of which are simple to make. For each menu and party size, Vivaldo provides a shopping list of ingredients that can be purchased well in advance and another for last-minute purchases of perishable items. In addition to recipes, there are time-saving techniques, money-saving ideas, and proposals for advance preparation. Table coverings, equivalent charts, glossaries of cheese and wine, and, most important, food and kitchen safety are also highlighted. Featuring full-color tables and contrasting sidebars, the layout is eminently readable. Additional photos of finished meals would have added to the book's appeal, but this is a small flaw. Do It For Less! Parties; Tricks of the Trade From Professional Caterers’ Kitchens by Denise Vivaldo, Cindie Flanagan, Martha Hopkins, and Andy-Sheen Turner contains various ideas such as developing a party plan (pages 18 and 19) (involving cookie jars, themes such as elvis and friends , photographs, postcards, greeting cards, seashells, pictures, teapots trophies etc.), choosing good equipment (pages 98 and 99), ingredients for various recipes such as the Italian meatball lasagna (pages 120 and 121), tabbouleh salad(pg.152),Moroccan lamb tangine with honey and lemon (pg 153), and drinks such as apple cider glaze and Sangria (pages 214 and 215). There are celebrity testimonials from the back of the book such as from Suzanne Somers (apparently Denise Vivaldo catered her 55th birthday party) and from Stephanie Hirsch (assistant to the late Julia Child).

I love to throw a party and do a lot of events for our church. This book caught my eye at the library and I had to buy my own copy. She gives you overall information about set ups and planning. She covers the details without becoming boring. My favorite part of the book is the individual event section. She plans out a menu for several different events from Bridal showers to 4th of July picnics. At the beginning of each section she gives ideas for decor, invites, etc. The menu is listed along with each recipe. The icing on the cake is that she breaks down the recipe by quantity. No more refiguring the recipe and shopping list for your own party - you can choose from 12,25, 50, 75 or 100 people. And you have a complete shopping list to follow. This is a book I have gone back to over and over again for ideas, inspiration and recipes. I get rave reviews everytime I make one of the dishes. Whether you have one or ten parties a year, this is a great investment. No matter how seasoned you are, I don't believe you ever stop looking for inspiration or new ideas!!
