Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A young girl, her father and the pet dog begin their day's adventure. On the hike, the girl asks questions and the dad responds in rhyme. All of the questions deal with what a princess would do on a hike. "Do princesses stop to smell the flowers? They've been known to do that for hours." All the questions and behavior are appropriate to the intended age of the children who will hear this lively read-aloud. What sets this picture book apart from others are the delightful illustrations in line and computer-generated color. There is hilarity in the character of the dog who has no speaking role but mimics the girl. The dog's hungry and tired look parallels the girl's as the hike continues. Behind the main action, the dog is expressive and full of antics that young children will enjoy throughout the story. In these illustrations, even the ladybug, bees and squirrel have entertaining roles. Look for the ant carrying away a cupcake when the hikers stop for a rest. Other unique features are the use of different but related fonts for the daughter-father dialogue, a place for a photo to be inserted on a back page ("Place your photo here") and a "Scavenger Hunt" on the final page. This sequel to Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? will speak to everyday children doing normal activities while imagining themselves special—like princesses. 2005, Rising Moon, Ages 4 to 7.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-Most children will relate to this precocious child and her endless questions as she and her father take a hike. The slightly bedraggled dad answers every query and supports his "princess" by holding her hand as she crosses the creek and hoisting her up on his shoulders so she can see a bird's nest. As they progress, the cartoon illustrations show the curious youngster, her ever-present pup, and the changing landscape. A scavenger hunt at the end sends the children back into the book to find "hidden" pictures. This is a really nice read-aloud for parents and teachers.-Beverly Combs, Webb Middle School, Garland, TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    The Perfect Father's Day Gift

Carmela LaVigna Coyle has trumped her own first picture book of the young girl who originally wondered if fashion dictates allowed for princesses to wear hiking boots. This time around the theme is a great hike with Dad. But, on their delightful outing, sure to bring smiles to the face of any parent, the young heroine needs to know if princesses are allowed to stop and smell flowers, what to do when a bee lands on the end of a royal¿s nose, can princesses save all the rocks they find plus climb boulders? Will lucky princesses see rabbits and deer? Do princesses really kiss frogs? AND, a really BIG QUESTION is what happens when princesses get hungry and tired? A complete day¿s adventure of a father and daughter is neatly penned by Coyle and brightly illustrated by Mike and Carl Gordon. The best parts are saved for last. The princess meets a cowboy with his Mom in tow and even better still, the princess has her picture taken with Dad by her faithful and comical canine who plunges into every adventure with exuberant enjoyment. The packaging of the book is terrific. A special plastic insert allows for young princesses to forever recall their hikes with their most favorite prince ¿ DAD ¿thanks to an enclosure for a real hiking photograph. Presto! Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs? becomes a scrapbook as well as a delightful storybook. A scavenger hunt rounds out a terrific book for a father and daughter to share both now and for years and years to come. Just imagine the joy, many years from now, when the same little princess has found her lifelong Prince and on her wedding day, Dad and the Princess take a special moment to re-read this wonderful book together at least one more time! FOR THE VERY YOUNG PRINCESSES

Those who fondly remember the precocious pony-tailed little princess in 'Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?' will be delighted with the return of the questioning young miss as she and her Dad prepare for a hike. As usual, she's full of questions, asking what she should wear, wondering how she'll carry her water. Then, when they are finally on their way, she busies herself exploring every creek, boulder, and field. The story of their trek is told in lilting rhyme, 'Will princesses get to see rabbits and deer? You never know what they might see and hear.' Short on narrative, the book abounds with colorful double page paintings by award winning artist Mike Gordon as he follows the pair throughout their day. I'd recommend this for the very young who are more interested in pictures than words. - Gail Cooke
