Overview

It's been five years since Dayton, Ohio, elementary school educator Robert Pollard turned his weekend hobby into a full-time profession, and just as long since his Guided By Voices released anything as gloriously poppy as their 1994 lo-fi classic BEE THOUSAND. Produced by Ric Ocasek, DO THE COLLAPSE attempts to recapture the old magic without the muddled sound and largely succeeds. Improving on the clarity suggested by 1997's MAG EARWHIG!, Ocasek gooses Pollard's Who/Beatles hooks with a wonderfully pronounced guitar crunch. At the same time, the cheekily technofied opening track, "Teenage FBI," and the blithely strummed, fantasia reverie "Dragon's Awake," remind us that, even at their most gainly, GBV are still oddballs at heart. So, fear not aging college-rock purists, DO THE COLLAPSE finds a middle ground between Pollard's quirky, four-track whimsy and the classic power-pop he grew up on.

Much has been said about GbV leaving the lo-fi world and enterring this uncharted territory. But most everyone got it wrong. Ric Ocasek's production seemed to allow all the creative juices inside Mr. Pollard's head to go straight to the making of this un-GbV-like masterpiece. Every song is amazing. They are complete and completely catchy. And the record sounds really good, too. I am fed up with those who do not allow GbV to do what they want to do. They are not true fans. They do not understand. Buy this and you will.
