Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
First published in France in 2006, this addition to the Sunscreen series aims to answer the sorts of questions that readers might be reluctant to ask their friends or family, such as “Why am I afraid of not being like everyone else?” or “Why doesn’t my crush want to go out with me?” Much of the advice boils down to variations on “it’s normal to feel that way,” and “just be yourself,” and the overall tone is unfailingly supportive. Pouilloux acknowledges the pressures that friends and the media can exert when it comes to smoking, drinking, and self-image, while encouraging independent thought and taking things at one’s own speed. Cointe’s full-color cartoon spot art provides welcome levity to balance the earnest text. Ages 10–14. (Oct.)
VOYA - Barbara Johnston
Growing up is a unique process that triggers questions about one's identity, feelings, and relationships. This self-help manual organizes twenty-eight concerns teens may have into four categories: "Who Am I?," "Parents," "Peers," and "Love." This book assures readers that most people at times feel ugly, scared, uncertain of their feelings, or different from others. Talking to parents or friends about these anxieties is an option, and reading this handbook is another. The content affirms that identity, emotions, and relationships morph with ongoing experiences. Illustrations show a girl's changing appearance at ages three, seven, and fourteen, when she declares that she wants to be somebody else. The ability to change may fulfill her wish. Relevant questions in the parent category discuss divorce, computer and TV limits, and why parents embarrass their kids. Each topic offers some pithy advice: "The more you behave responsibly, the more freedom you'll have." Written conversationally, with minimum text, this manual uses playful comic-book-type illustrations to give it a "cool" factor and deliver its message. Worried about being a good kisser? Check out this pair—with tongue rings interlocked, the bubble above two "smoochers" reads, "Now what do we do?" No self-help guide is able to satisfy completely the questions an individual has about kissing or life; however, this one does a good job of reassuring its readers that having those questions is entirely normal and that continuing to ask them is as important as their changing responses.
