Los doce pasos que Armstrong sugiere empiezan con “Aprendamos sobre la compasión” y se cierran con “Ama a tus enemigos”. Entre ambos capítulos, nos habla de la compasión hacia nosotros mismos; de la práctica del  mindfulness; del sufrimiento; de las alegrías compartidas y también de los límites de nuestro conocimiento de los demás.
A lo largo del texto, propone formas concretas de poner en práctica la compasión en nuestras vidas cotidianas, y nos insta a que aprendamos a ponernos en el lugar de los demás.
El libro recoge también la Carta de la Compasión que ha sido firmada por destacadas personalidades de diversas religiones.
