    Great Read

I really enjoyed this Doctor Who book. Justin Richards did a great job employing the characters from the show and then creating a great ensemble of character to interact with the Doctor and Amy.

The first 2/3rds of the book, the splot and story is excellent, the last 1/3 science goes out the window and fiction takes completely over. Regardless, the story is well told and is enjoyable to read. I ended up reading this book in about 4 hours one afternoon. I highly recommend it as far as New Doctor Who books go.

As a relatively new fan of the Doctor, I'm at that point in my fandom whereby I want to immerse myself the Doctor universe and read all the stories I can about him. The latest addition to my Doctor book collection is Apollo 23.

Somehow, a woman and her dog end up dead on the moon; at almost the same time, an astronaut working on the moon finds himself in a London shopping mall. How could this happen? Ah! Secret government technology (not well understood, mind you, since it's the government we're dealing with here) that allow someone to walk from NASA's secret base deep in the heart of Texas and end up on the dark side of the moon (insert your own Pink Floyd joke here).

Naturally, Amy and the Doctor come across this situation and begin to investigate. What they find is at first puzzling, then downright terrifying. They very quickly learn that they can trust no one... well, almost no one. Eventually, the Doctor ends up stranded on earth, separated from the Tardis and Amy. Needless to say, NASA does have a very old trick up its sleeve, and with the Doctor's help, he is back on the moon to help save the day.

Overall, this is a great story that makes an excellent choice for summer reading - especially for those younger sci-fi fans who participate in summer reading challenges (only 185 pages on my Nook). The story moves quickly with few - if any - dead spots. There's plenty of wit and humor, a lot of sci-fi, as well as a little something for the conspiracy fans out there. Obviously, you'll get more out of this if you are a fan of the (11th) Doctor, but you could read this and enjoy it even if you weren't.

BOTTOM LINE: An excellent summer read for Whovians.
