Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Through gentle verse and wondrous photographs, Where Does God Live? invites you to take a journey with your children to discover the God in all of us and our world."
Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, author of God's Paintbrush and In God’s Name

“How lovely to have this book for young children that uses images and words they know well to convey the intimacy, immediacy, and availability of the experience of God.”
Sylvia Boorstein, author of That’s Funny, You Don’t Look Buddhist

Publishers Weekly
For kids who have questions about prayer in their lives, SkyLight Paths offers Does God Hear My Prayer? by August Gold, illus. with photos by Diane Hardy Waller, designed as an introduction to prayer as well as a family discussion starter. Framed as a verbal exchange between mother and child, this lighthearted text explains prayer as an expression of friendship between a person and God, and ultimately suggests, "prayer isn't telling God what to do-/ it is letting God help you remember what's true." Photos of children from around the world illustrate the text, which includes an endorsement from "Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Buddhist religious leaders." Children's Literature
In this title, the child asks a difficult question and finds it answered in many ways. From the text, children will learn to understand that God does not always give them everything they request. Instead, God accepts friendship, tears, and fears, and all feelings and wants children and adults to be listeners. In other words, they can listen to what is in their hearts. Children hearing or reading the text learn they are "God's treasures" and that they are worthy members of society. The text is written in rhyme which works in most places, though in a few spots, the rhyme seems forced. Nevertheless, the message here is an important one—the message is that God lives in the hearts of children all over the world. This idea of an all-encompassing God works very well. Wonderful photos of children support and enrich the text. The book is said to be "endorsed by Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Buddhist religious leaders. 2005, Skylight Paths Publishing, Ages 3 to 6.
—Nancy Garhan Attebury
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-When an unnamed child is disappointed after prayers for a "shiny red bike" seemingly go unanswered, Mom and Dad gently explain the purpose of prayer and how God's love fills our daily lives. While describing appropriate ways to talk to God, the parents tenderly state, "You are God's treasure/and will always be./God loves us as we are-/we are all God's family," and conclude that "prayer isn't telling/God what to do-/it is letting God help you/remember what's true." The rhyming text is printed in colorful type, with the youngster's questions written in childish script. Attractive color photographs of smiling children of many cultures and engaging scenes from nature that are framed in roughly sketched crayon borders perfectly reflect the tone and message of this lovely, nondenominational book. Pair it with Rachel Field's Prayer for a Child (S & S, 1968), which also illustrates how prayer can be applied to all aspects of daily life.-Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
