Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Get ready to howl over this utterly adorable ABC book of puppies! From Dalmatians to beagles to pugs, this extreme-angle photo book shows a wide variety of pooches doing hilarious and totally sweet things, including a jumping border collie for the letter J, a forlorn-looking miniature pinscher for the letter N ("No!"), and a happy Bernese mountain dog for the letter R ("Roll over and over and over"). Whatever your favorite doggie in the book, each colorful photo -- set against a stark white background -- is ultra-close-up and taken at a unique angle, making the pooch virtually leap from the page and certain to make your heart melt. What's more, there is even a full list of breeds featured in the book for helpful reference. For all those dog lovers out there -- and anyone looking for a different ABC book for youngsters -- this alphabet book is a treat that you'll want to check out.
Publishers Weekly
Purebred puppies and miniature dogs, gazing at the camera with adoring, dewy eyes and sniffing with big moist noses, appear in this high-end, greeting card-cute photographic ABC. Most of the snapshots are taken in the comical snout-in-the-camera mode, so that the dogs' heads appear enormous and their bodies look stuffed-animal tiny. A fuzzy young beagle softly gums a rawhide chew toy for the letter F, "Fetch!" and a black pug licks its nose with a pink tongue for the letter M ("Mmmmmm"). Occasionally, the photographers exchange the facial close-up for an aft shot. A wiry-haired dachshund-whose body looks hyperextended given the extreme perspective-models for the letter T, "Tail," and a silky King Charles spaniel waves a greeting on the W page ("Wag, wag, wag"). According to the text, these images were taken by multiple artists for the Dog Artlist Collection and became a postcard series in Japan, but the consistency of the shots and the symmetry of the pages suggest a strict, uniform approach. The editors allot one letter and one dog to each page, and place every image within a pure-white, empty background, a la DK's informational books. An index names the dog breed representing each letter (not a mutt in the mix). While the ebullient animals exude energy, this tidy alphabet seems designed for maximum visual impact at the expense of draining them of animation. All ages. (Apr.) PreS-Gr 2-This bare-bones ABC book breaks no new ground, but it will be adored by dog lovers. One capital letter appears in the corner of each white page along with corresponding "dog" words. The irresistible, artistically photographed puppies that illustrate the words and phrases are the real draw here. F is for "Fetch," G is for "Good dog," Q shows a "Quiet" Welsh corgi, and Z features a snoozing spaniel. Taken from unusual angles, the photos highlight the characteristics of each pup. For example, a boxer's head appears to be almost as big as his body and a pug looks to be all tongue. Some of the puppies seem to be looking right at readers, and others look as if they might just walk right off the pages. All of the breeds are identified in a list at the end of the book.-Melinda Piehler, Sawgrass Elementary School, Sunrise, FL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A gathering of relentlessly cute puppy photos selected from a commercial online archive and loosely matched to alphabetic captions: Beg, Eat, Fetch, Howl, etc. With a few exceptions, each puppy is a different breed (identified at the end); all are posed in close-up, against white backgrounds, and generally looking up from the page. Thanks to the distortions of angles and lenses, many seem to have grossly oversized heads and stubby limbs, but susceptible viewers are sure to find these pups fetching nonetheless. Along with similar images, the photos are already available as greeting cards, games, calendars, and plush animals-but young dog lovers who just can't get enough will drool over this blatantly appealing gallery.
