Overview

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and dog heroes are every bit as varied. From gentle therapy dogs visiting hospitalized children and the elderly, to fearless search-and-rescue dogs putting in long hours at disaster sites, dog heroes hold a special place in the hearts of animal lovers. Courageous, faithful, and hardworking, they want only to do their jobs and please their people.

The beautiful posters in Dog Heroes celebrate 30 animals who have given their all to help people in trouble. Dogs were on the scene after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. They have found scared victims trapped in avalanches, collapsed mines, and burning buildings. Guide dogs give disabled people their independence, and therapy dogs bring sunshine into hospitals and nursing homes.

Every kind of canine hero is featured here on 30 full-color, pull-out posters no dog-loving child will be able to resist. The back of each poster tells the story of the extraordinary dog captured in an act of heroism. Kids will love to read about the dignity and perseverance these animals bring to every assignment. They are true role models — inspirational, courageous, and faithful.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Miriam Chernick
This is a fascinating look at a range of canine heroes—thirty in all—who, whether by training or by instinct, have acted bravely to help someone in need. There are stories about dogs that have saved people from water, snow, fire, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Some dogs, through their sense of smell, have detected cancer in humans. Others have followed more traditional paths as therapy or seeing-eye dogs. The stories come from around the world and cover both historical events (e.g., dogs who helped protect our troops during the Vietnam War) and modern ones (e.g., dog rescuers in New York City after the 9/11 attack). Wonderfully, a range of breeds are featured. Beyond the typical German shepherds and labs, we see hero chihuahuas and bulldogs, dalmatians and mutts. The format is unique. Each page of text has a pull-out full-page poster on the back. The photographs are stunning, making these dogs seem to come alive. While each story is different, every dog is courageous and hardworking, easily earning the title "man's best friend." Any kid—especially dog lovers—will pore over these stories and their pictures, amazed at the inspirational feats of these dog heroes. Includes a list of resources in the back. A "Story Poster" book. Interesting book. Very well done.

I bought this book for my granddaughter, and I think she will enjoy it.
