Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Many of the dog facts may not be necessarily new, but the story of them is told from a dog's perspective. Another unusual aspect of the book is the perspective of the photographs. The dogs' faces generally appear to be normal size but the bodies are not in proportion. It does take some getting used to. Labeled "A Q&A Reader," the book asks such questions as: Why do dogs sniff everything? or Why do dogs wiggle their ears so much? The answers can be quite lengthy. Dogs sniff to find out what is going on in the world, and their sense of smell is far more acute than that of humans. "Dogs have about 220 million cells for smelling. A human being only has about five million." As for wiggling their ears, ears are used for more than hearing; they are also a way to communicate. Dogs once again have a hearing range far beyond that of humans. In addition to answers to the various questions posed, this reader also gives examples of the breeds that are known for a particular characteristic. For example, the Basset Hound has the biggest ears. Kids and caregivers will enjoy all the facts—and watch out if you ever play dog trivia. This book could also be useful in ESL classes for teens and adults.
