Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this story about a dog with a thing for footwear, Gormley's buoyant text should capture readers right off the mark: "Dog was reading a brilliant book, all about a cat who wore a pair of truly magnificent boots." Inspired by Puss's swashbuckling shoes, Dog goes on his own quest to find a pair of his own. Angaramo paints an exceptionally appealing pup, beatific in his delight when things go according to plan, and only mildly puzzled when they don't ("The flippers were fantastic for swimming, but when Dog tried to scratch, they flip-flap-flopped around his head in a very unsatisfying way"). After an unsuccessful run in black pumps and an anticlimactic experience on skis, he discovers that his own paws are best for running, scratching, swimming, and digging. A shopkeeper, who remains patient throughout Dog's footwear experiments (and has a generous return policy), gently delivers the message about not looking further than one's own backyard (or, in this case, paws). The final spread, in which Dog is inspired by a new fashion accessory, suggests that Dog hasn't quite absorbed the concept. Ages 3–6. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Mary Quattlebaum
Dog's imagination is fired by the fairy tale "Puss in Boots." He, too, wants such magnificent, swashbuckling footgear. But the different types—rain boots, flippers, high heels and skis—that he tries at various times prove cumbersome, irksome and downright silly. And then the shopkeeper points out Dog's four "nice and furry" paws, which are perfect for all the digging, swimming, scratching and running that he wants to do. What a happy ending! Kids will enjoy the book's playful premise and endearing main character, whose exuberant, tongue-lolling personality comes across vividly through Greg Gormley's inventive text and Roberta Angaramo's colorful illustrations. K-Gr 3—Readers will fall in love with adorable Dog as he looks for some perfect footwear after reading "Puss in Boots." At the store he's fitted with four boots exactly like the ones in the book, but he soon finds out they get too muddy while digging for his bone. He tries yellow rubber boots, but sinks while swimming in the pond. Flippers are fabulous for swimming, but a misery when trying to scratch an itch on his back. After he tries out a few more options, the shopkeeper points out that he already has exactly what he needs—paws. Dog is thrilled with this discovery—until he goes home and reads a book about a girl with a red-hooded cloak. Text with varying font sizes cleverly provides emphasis, and lively illustrations done in bright acrylics are in perfect sync and at times pop off the page. Dog's facial expressions, wagging tail, and humorous antics steal the show, but it's his smile that will immediately capture readers' hearts. Angaramo extends the fun onto the endpapers with more entertaining illustrations of Dog. This tale begs for multiple readings.—Anne Beier, Clifton Public Library, NJ
Kirkus Reviews

Inspired by the story "Puss in Boots," Dog decides that he needs some splendid boots of his own, so he trots off to his local shoe shop to purchase a pair. While the boots are quite handsome, they are not particularly well-suited for digging, so Dog brings them back. Galoshes are great for digging, but not so much for swimming, so... The very appealing illustrations, replete with liveliness, warmth and charm, show Dog as he enthusiastically tries out a variety of footwear options and the ever-patient shopkeeper as he makes helpful suggestions and maintains an unusually generous return policy. After Dog's failed experiments with the original boots, some galoshes, flippers, high heels and skis, he returns again, asking for "...something that's good for digging and swimming and scratching and running. Oh, nice and furry too." Could it be that Dog may already have what he needs? After getting an answer—and having an extremely gratifying romp—Dog returns home to start a new book, this one about a girl with a striking red hood. Uh oh! Children will identify with Dog's good-natured struggle through trial and error, fall in love with the evocative and funny illustrations and laugh out loud at the satisfying ending. A truly enjoyable selection and a nice follow-up to a favorite fairy tale, just right for reading aloud. (Picture book. 3-6)
