Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Pull one tab and a pug wags his tail. Try another and a wet mutt shakes his fur dry. Kids will adore playing alpha dog to this canine crew, whose charming photos lend themselves to clever pull-tabs and furry textures to pet. Rough-and-tumble verse also teaches new words and concepts: "Smooth dog, curly dog, chase dog...catch! Fleas make an itchy dog scratch, scratch, scratch!" (ages 2 and up)
The February 2007 issue of Child magazine
Publishers Weekly
After the success of Tails, Matthew Van Fleet follows up with Dog, with photos by Brian Stanton, in which pug puppies, full-grown golden retrievers, and good plus misbehaving dogs invite youngsters to flop their ears and pet their fur. Tabs allow readers to wag the dogs and watch them shake, among other activities. Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
If you do not want to own this book, you should at least make an effort to see it. With only twenty-plus pages, including both inside covers and both sides of two flaps, this 2 lb., 10" long by 7" high white book is a dog lover's treat. The information on the back of the book indicates there are twenty breeds of dogs pictured, but there are many more photographs than that. There are large and small dogs, furry and sleek dogs, puppies and full-grown dogs. The designer of this dog bonanza has added pull-tabs to make tails wag and legs scratch, and put texture in tails and ears to be touched. The words are brief but flow nicely. "Fluffy dog, Scruffy dog, Droopy dog sags, Perky little puppy dog—wag, wag, wag!" Or "Good dog, Bad dog, Neat dog, Sloppy." The dachshund, whose ears are textured and floppy, is a treat, as is the neat dog with a towel in his collar as he eats. All dogs are reprised on the last pages and are identified by their real names. From Friday, the Old English Sheepdog, to Poncho, the long-haired Chihuahua, you will love them all.
School Library Journal

PreS - K - This sturdy offering presents full-color photos of charismatic canines embellished with pull tabs and tactile (mostly furlike) textures. The brief, rhyming text highlights various critters and their behaviors, making comparisons and contrasts. On one page, a wheaton terrier ("Little dog") is posed next to an English mastiff ("Big dog") and a nervous-looking Chihuahua ("Teeny dog quakes"), while opposite, a neatly coiffed schnauzer backs away from a damp mutt in a tub and the verse finishes, "Dry dog,/Wet dog-/shake,/shake,/shake!" (a pull tab moves the bather's head from side to side). Unfortunately, some of the concepts are not as clearly presented. One spread reads: "Happy dog,/Sad dog,/Friendly dog licks./Slobber dog,/Pant dog,/Drooly dog sticks!" Aside from the awkward phrasing, children may not notice that the aforementioned pooch has a touchable sticky tongue (it's rather small) and miss the point completely. A page showing a Lab puppy in a squatting position declares, "All dogs poop," while the English bulldog standing nearby lifts its leg-with the help of a pull tab-revealing, "All dogs pee." The book ends with foldouts that introduce each pet by name and breed. Leave this one for the bookstore crowd.-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

    Best book ever!

Very cute! My son got this at age 9mos and totally destroyed the first copy we read it so much! We are on our way to purchasing copy #3. It keeps little mind's attention; very good visual, touch and feel, and educational on the types of dogs and what they do. His favorite page is the "CAT!" at the end.

Fantastic for babies and toddlers - the rhythm is addictive!

My little boy just adores this book - we have been reading it to him since he was 12 months old, and he loves the rhythm and movement of all the pages, as well as touching the different textures. It is a beautifully presented book, and is quite robust for little hands. I would recommend this to every parent!

The entire family loves this book -- especially Papa!

Throughout the past year, we have purchased multiple copies of this clever book to give as a gift for the birth of a new baby, a birthday, or holiday treat. Everyone who has received it tells us they love the book, and it's not just the kids but the entire family! The dog photos are wonderful, with an amazing variety of sizes, colors and breeds. The story line is absolutely zany! Our 5-year-old granddaughter and 2-year-old grandson never turn down an opportunity to hear it "one more time." It's an easy read for beginners, and it's also a great book for quiet time--except you can't help but laugh out loud on several of the pages. Interactive, educational and fun, "Dogs" is wholeheartedly endorsed by this Nana and Papa.

"Dog" Was an Instant Classic in Our Household

My mother-in-law bought "Dog" for her great niece a couple of years ago and told us all about it. So, naturally, when we had our daughter last July, we had to buy it. It is great, and she loves it! She loves to feel the textures of the dogs' fur, and loves the pull tabs. Her face lights up when the dogs' tails wag. She is only 8 months old, so she doesn't see the humor in it yet, but I'm sure when we start potty-training she will love the "All dogs poop and all dogs pee" line. (Her daddy and I get a good laugh at the dog lifting his leg.) We read this book together nearly every day, and I'm sure this ritual will continue. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone with small children who are not offended by pooping dogs! It must be pretty popular, because we had to order it online. We never could find it in our local Barnes and Noble store. So, overall, not only is this an entertaining book for adults, it is especially engaging for young, developing minds!

Great book for little ones that like dogs!

My 21 month daughter loves this book--we've been reading it many times a day since Christmas. We also love Tails, too, which I've had for years with my other kids. The books are very sturdy and even little ones can work the interactive parts. It's her favorite book!

A very fun and engaging book for youngsters

This has been a treasured gift for kids 12 mon - 3 yrs. Perfect for any dog-loving family. Like all interactive books, some of the tabs rip off from repeated use by excited children, but it's still fun.

    The best kids book!

My son is 15 months old and this is definitely his favorite book. We read a story every night before bed and he ALWAYS chooses this one! He usually has a pretty short attention span but with all of the different textures and pull tabs he can't get enough of this book. He also enjoys Tails and Alphabet but Dog is his favorite!

    the kids love it

I take care of two kids every day, one a grand nephew, 18 months and one a grand child, 10 months. This is my second copy of the book. They love and touch it and I don't care. Anything that promotes reading and love of books is okay by me.

    My baby's favorite book!

I am in the process of ordering this book for the 2nd time as her 1st book is so worn out! It has been her absolute favorite since she was 8 months old. We've lugged it along on trips and it was such a lifesaver as it always captivated her. Wherever we've taken it, other kids of all ages have gone crazy over it too! I highly recommend it as it is great for their developing motor skills from such an early age.

    High-Quality and Fun!

I picked this book from the NY Times Bestsellers list not knowing anything else about it. I was very surprised to see how well made it was and how much fun it offered. It introduces the many types of dogs and the natural things that dogs do. It also includes a doggie index! My kids love the interactiveness of the book and especially like finding the special visitor...this is a book for our memory box!

Great Book, My toddler loves it!

I am a Big Fan of Tails, and when I saw this new book by Mathew Fleet, I jumped at it as my toddler is obsessed with dogs. He loves this book and whenever he wants to read it he points at it and barks. When I show him it he squeals with delight at the prospect of reading it. The interactive items like tails, keep my bustling 18 month old captivated. We have read it a million times and it never gets old for him. Mom, and dad, yes, him, no.
