Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Alexandria LaFaye
In this new addition to the Puffin "Easy-to-Read" program, a dog named Sam struggles to cope with the fact that the things he wants to do upset the humans in his life. He wants to fetch, so he retrieves all the newspapers in the neighborhood, a clothesline, and a running hose. When his owners thwart his unorthodox fetching behaviors, he decides to feed his need to fetch by getting the kids from the bus stop after school. Sam goes through a similar crisis with swimming and the desire to stay up at night. In each instance, he has a disruptive urge that must be curtailed, then rerouted into more appropriate behavior. This plot pattern will be familiar to most parents with young children and to the child readers themselves on a subconscious level if not overtly. Sam's stories are funny and familiar. Many early readers will enjoy this book. 1998 (orig.

K-Gr 2-Sam is a lovable brown-haired mutt who exhibits typical puppy behavior. Despite his fetching all the newspapers in the neighborhood and howling all night, he manages to endear himself to his charming, round-faced family, and will appeal to young readers as well. Children will enjoy the easy-to-manage text and the lively gouache, acrylic, and pencil artwork. A surefire choice for dog lovers that could be used to spark discussions or story-writing sessions about other kinds of pets and pet behavior.Jan Shepherd Ross, Dixie Elementary Magnet School, Lexington, KY
