Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
It's the night before Halloween. Missy, a cocker spaniel; Muffin, a mutt; and a box of puppies are missing from the dog-friendly small town of Pembrook. Worried about their friends, a pack of dogs forms a posse to find them. "Morning or night, Pembrook dogs unite!" is their rallying howl. The dogs act in many human ways: for example, Kito can read, and the posse is well organized but they're careful to keep their skills hidden from the people around them. The dogs have distinct personalities, which usually work, although one dog's characteristic trait is that his speech is typed with extra letters ("Thiiis iiiis diiiffffereent," for example, whatever that's supposed to sound like). Working as a team, the dogs discover their missing companions are perfectly happy and safe, living with the town's developmentally-delayed newspaper delivery guy. There is a happy ending for everyone. It's easy to imagine introspective readers getting sucked into this book, especially if they're interested in dogs. The book has a slightly spooky tone: It begins with the death of a waxwing; bad neighbors and their devilish cat, Sheeba, live in a church and collect butterflies; the dogs think they hear Muffin's ghost; one scene is set in a house of horrors; there's a reference to burying dead dogs. Penciled illustrations are scattered throughout. The cover is full-color and glossy, but the inside is printed on low-quality pulp paper. From the "Dog Watch" series.

    Smiley Face, Smiley Face

Dog-Napped! was good. I liked some of the other Dog Watch books better, but it was still good. Definitely something dog-lovers will enjoy.
