Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Raja, a soulful-eyed dog, loves the color red and chewing. He gets roundly scolded when he chews Mrs. Lal's red shawl, young Tanvi's red shoes, and Mr. Lal's red and gray socks. He is exiled to the park with Tanvi. There he meets his dog friend Champ, who is sad because he can't find the red ball they usually play with. As Raja tries to locate it, we get a lesson in color identification. Gray pigeons and an orange striped kitten are no help. With his red radar, Raja spots red beetles and bugs. Then he sees the ball in Mr. Mehta's yard. Mr. Mehta doesn't like dogs, but brave Raja retrieves the ball and manages to make his way through many colored obstacles back to the park and a happy Champ. His reward, however, is a much needed bath. Double-page stylized scenes are actively designed with textured mixed media, enthusiastically applied to enhance the humorous canine adventures. Large typeface has the appearance of hand calligraphy, with each color emphatically large and printed in the named hue. The emphasis is on the frenetic chase with accents added by the colored words. The Indian background is merely suggested. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
