Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is a popular American humorist, songwriter, children’s author, and illustrator. Boynton has written and illustrated more than forty books for both children and adults, as well as more than four thousand greeting cards and four music albums. She has designed—for various companies—calendars, wallpaper, bedding, stationery, paper goods, clothing, jewelry, and plush toys.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

Super cute and fun to read

This book is good for teaching counting, is fun to read, and maybe more fun for me to read than for my kid to listen to. :)

    Fun Book

My grandson loves doggies. This book delights him. He points to the doggies and shouts doggie! He is just learning to talk and one of his best words is "doggies". He also pants like a dog when he sees the pictures.

    Only Okay

This book didn't really tell a story. It was just counting. My son doesn't go back to this one over and over like Boynton's other books.

    Best Book Ever

My 16-month old thinks this is the best book ever written. I really have to agree. It's so perfect. Boynton brings all the qualities of a successful longer book into board book form: great characters, a cute story (there are 10 dogs!), and a few twists and turns along the way (sometimes they don't bark).

I read this over and over and over, and neither of us has gotten tired of it yet. I highly recommend this board book for babies and small children!

    Woof woof

Another Sandra Boynton winner. You can't help but laugh with each new bark. Babies love the animation of the reader and it always becomes a favorite at least with my grandchildren it was.

    WOOF

I have used this book with two little boys around six-months old. They love it and it continued to be a favorite until around two-years old for one little one. The other is just seven-months old now. He fusses to have it read and reread and reread and reread and.......

    I Also Recommend:

    This book is a hoot!

Leave it to Sandra Boynton to come up with counting book that has you barking and howling like a dog...you just have to! My grand-daughter loves when I read it. The rest of the family just thinks I'm nuts. Each page adds a dog that, of course, barks in a different way...so you have to bark for each dog every time you turn the page! Have fun!

    Cute dog illustrations.

I like the dog illustrations. My baby loves dogs so she'll look at this book over and over. It adds counting to ten, and all the dogs are funny, but it's not the funnest book to read aloud.

    Again, again, again!

My 18 month old son loves this book! He laughs at the many different sounds that dogs make. He brings the book to all our visitors to hear their version as well. Needless to say, we read it alot.

    Arrrrrooooooooo

This book is the greatest! Not only is it my toddlers favorite, but everytime I read it to him, our dog (German Shephard) comes and sits with us and starts howling. Before you know it, the three of us are all howling together. We probably read this book at least four or five times a week and it is enjoyed by all, including the dog!

Baby Loves It, Mom Has To Hide It Sometimes!

This book is a lot of fun. My 15 month old son will get into a mood and want me to read it so much that sometimes we have to hide it for a little while! MY favorite page...Six quiet dogs!
