We can count the rambunctious dogs from one to ten as they dash out of the house, heedless of their master's pleas and orders. The jolly rhymes seem to run along with the wild, assorted pooches through the gate to the park, followed by their frantic owner, leash in hand. As he repeats his commands to "SIT!" "LIE DOWN!" and "STAY!" "Doggone dogs do not obey. They turn and run the other way!" They create havoc in the park, past pond, playground, and trashcans. Then, "PEEEU-U-WWW!" there are scoops of poops to scoop. The dogs are soon mournful, locked up by the park's dog trainer. When the guard falls asleep, however, they break out and their exhausted owner can finally count them back inside. The canine crew is introduced on the front cover, in a handful of caricatures of various sizes and shapes, all set to go. On the back they are asleep in a heap, worn out from their mischief. They cavort in silhouette across the end pages. Pencil lines define their characters while watercolors add to each dog's individuality and the sites of their adventures. The wild actions overflow the double pages. The distraught owner and the bewildered guard are exaggerated comic characters whose ineffectual behaviors add to the frenetic fun. The hapless owner of 10 energetic dogs is rudely awakened at dawn by their barking. When they are told to lie down or sit, they do not obey. Instead, they run helter-skelter outdoors, with their pajama-clad owner chasing them and clutching empty leashes all the way to Central Bark. The dogs wreak havoc at the Perfect Pooch Obedience School and cavort through the grass, dumping the trash, climbing the slide, and making a mess of everything. Further disaster ensues when the pups poop. The trainer quits, the Pup Tech 5000 comes rolling along to clean up, and the dogs are put in a pen. However, they are not ready to bow to defeat. They leap and dig their way out and run back home, followed by their still-pajama-clad owner still clutching the leashes. The dogs collapse on the couch and rest up, as they "Cannot wait to go again!" The minimal rhyming text is paired with Catrow's exuberant, comic, pencil and watercolor illustrations.     Great for counting and read alouds

    My 3yr old loves this book and is learning to count because of the book. You can count the dogs from 1-10 and see the silly things they do. This book was given as a gift and my son has to have it read everynight. The pictures are colorful and fun to look at.

    Very Catchy

    We received this book as a gift for our son's birth. He has loved it ever since we established bedtime reading and when given the choice this book is now the first one he will pull off the shelf to read. Now that he is 1.5 years old he tries to "read along" and this book makes it easy because of it's great rhymes and engaging pictures. Our favorite line is "Call the troops! We need ten scoops to clean up all these doggone poops."

    We will buy this book for our nephew's first Christmas.

    Laugh Out Loud

    I read this book standing in the store and found myself laughing out loud. My family loves dogs, so I knew this would be something to add to our collection of children's literature. We also bought this for our nephew (who loves it) last Christmas. It's always good to find a book that not only your children can enjoy, but will entertain those who read it with them. Funny story with engaging illustrations. We highly recommend this book.

    Doggone Dogs

    My four year old grandson had a couple of bad experiences with a new puppy of my son's. I was hoping if we made light of those "doggone dogs" it would help him to get over the fear that he had around the puppy. We laughed out loud when we read it together and he loved the story. The illustrations are also delightful. It helped him to understand that all dogs can be a little rambunctious at times, but they were still lovable!
