Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Thinking back to the books I bought my children when they were young somehow makes me feel like they missed something when I read a book like this one. What child would not love a book where the characters are called Jimmy Sniffles and Dr. Snottenstein? Inventions by this Doctor include a Superpower Sucker Outer, a Super Sinus 6000, and a Booger Zooka. Jimmy realizes that he only sneezes when there is danger, and he cannot figure out why he is sneezing when he sees his neighbor talking to a clown and exchanging money. Jimmy jumps in the back of the van driven by the clown and arrives at a factory called Toxico. Jimmy soon realizes that the clown has stolen many pets and then dressed them in costumes in order to form a circus sideshow. Jimmy uses his head, or I should say his sinus filled nose, to save the day. I will not give the gory details of how he accomplishes this, but it does involve using the Super Sucker Outer. If there was ever a book written for a young boy, this is it. Of course being written in graphic form only adds to the enjoyment of the story. Also helpful is the introduction of characters by name and picture on the first two pages. This is definitely an outstanding tool for helping the reader to follow the story. Included at the end of the book is further information about what it is like to be an actual clown, information about the author and illustrator, "Discussion Questions and Writing Prompts," and step-by-step directions about how to use the Fact Hound web site. This web site is particularly beneficial because it is set up to allow the user to select the grade level of information they want. This is a great book to hook a reluctant reader into reading! I highlyrecommend this book.
