My wife and I are seriously considering getting a canine companion now that I'm retired. I grew up with a dog, but it's been a long time since I lived with one. I've been reading and talking to a variety of informed sources. I want to understand what we would be getting ourselves into... good and not so good... before deciding whether to get a dog and which kind would be a good fit for us. This book has been a valuable resource in our decision-making. It's well-organized, well-written, and comprehensive. If we do get a dog, I'm sure it will also be a valuable reference as we learn to help our dog become an enjoyable member of our empty-nest.
