Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The sequel to Cat, Cats, Cats!, Dogs, Dogs, Dogs! by Leslea Newman, illus. by Erika Oller, chronicles dogs-about-town in translucent watercolors that give the pooches personality and their fur texture. Once the pack numbers 10, they play in the park, then count down, one by one, as each dog heads home. (June) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Dog lovers will be delighted with the playful adventures of this group of canines. The counting book begins with one dog walking alone through the city and ends with him returning home, somewhat dirtier. All the dogs, from the single guy to a group of ten, gallivant to the park and the fun begins. "Dogs chasing tennis balls, dogs chasing sticks/ Dogs chasing butterflies, dogs doing tricks/ Dogs drinking out of puddles, dogs eating snacks/ Dogs lying on their bellies, dogs on their backs." Soon the restless dogs, from ten to one, return home and yes, they are still having lots of fun! Charming watercolor paintings capture the canines in all their glorious, mischievous play. Look carefully at all the dogs, their expressions and actions are priceless. The engaging rhyming story will invite youngsters to read it again and again. The book deserves ten paws out of a possible ten! 2002, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers/Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division,

PreS-Gr 1-A jubilant jumble of dogs jaunts from page to page in this casual concept book. As in Cats, Cats, Cats! (S & S, 2001), Oller's warm, caricature watercolor illustrations excel. Newman's romping, rhyming text features from 1 to 10 dogs as they head to the park and create havoc with a plethora of playful pups, and then it counts down to one dog making his way across the cityscape. Canines almost blend into one another in the soft, fluid illustrations, challenging those who actually want to count them. If a crisp, clear concept book is desired, there are better choices; however, it would be a shame to miss this splendid celebration of dogs and joyful read-aloud text.-Jody McCoy, The Bush School, Seattle, WA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Newman and Oller (Cats, Cats, Cats!, 2001) join forces again for this canine counting exercise featuring a pack of extremely exuberant dogs of every size, shape, and shade. The rhyming text begins with "one dog walking through the city all alone," and continues, with an escalating pace, in following consecutively larger groups of dogs wagging, racing, lunging, dashing, and gallivanting. They converge with even more dogs in a city park, with their impish group antics shown over two double-page spreads. Then the dogs are "homeward bound," as the following pages count down through smaller groups of dogs, back to the same single dog from the first page, now tired and dirty, heading home. Newman's rollicking, action-filled text is playful and cheerful, if occasionally just a bit forced in a few of the rhyming words. She does an excellent job of increasing the dramatic tension as the groups of dogs grow larger and more boisterous, devising quite an array of collisions and physical comedy. Oller's wonderfully subtle watercolors are full of motion and humorous details that will amuse children who like to search illustrations for tiny visual jokes. She has a flair for both animal expressions and body placement, and her loose, playful style suits the amusing antics of the dozens of dogs. Another collaboration (on the subject of perennially popular pigs) is already in the works for this talented pair. (Picture book. 3-8)
