Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Any child with a love of dogs and puppies will thoroughly enjoy this book; not so much for the written words, but for the accompanying photographs. The book is filled with picture after picture of adorable, squeezable pups of every shape and size that kids are sure to love looking at. While the text is somewhat simple and offers only basic information about puppies, it does answer specific questions, such as what puppies eat, what happens before and after they are born and how you can tell when a puppy is grown up. This should be enough to satisfy an early preschooler, but will not necessarily hold the interest of an older child. One nice feature of the book is that it offers a few interesting tidbits of information that most people don't know about dogs. For example, contrary to popular belief, a puppy with large paws does not necessarily mean he will grow into a large dog. The glossary of terms is extremely limited, listing only four terms. However, there is a nice section referring readers who want more information to interesting web sites, magazines, organizations and even The Dog Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. Great pictures, but not a whole lot more. Definitely for younger children. Part of the "Animals and Their Young" series. 2001, Compass Point Books, $18.60. Ages 3 to 6. Reviewer: Emily Cook
