Mark Derr... Masson's dogs are literary animals created in his image. They fit within a sentimental tradition that sees dogs as childlike, loyal, compassionate, devoted, loving, guileless, pure. That is an uplifting portrait, but it is no more accurate than the view of them as biological machines. The flesh-and-bone dog is missing from both.
