Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Dogs on the Job! has eighteen chapters that tell about many different working dogs. From Jet who clears airport runways to Madison who is a bloodhound that tracks missing persons, each dog has his story told and why that "dog job" is important. Readers will also learn about some of the famous working dogs from history. Christopher Farran, the author, does a nice job of displaying a wide variety of jobs, however, does not cover some of the more well-known "dog jobs." Jobs such as police dogs or guide dogs are mentioned and some stories even state that a particular dog was once a police dog, but there is never a whole chapter to explain the importance of the job. There are multiple chapters on "pet trackers" and a few more on "pet actors." While all of these chapters are interesting, the book would be more complete if the repeated "dog job" chapters were replaced by those not covered. The dogs and their stories are described well and simply, and are easy for readers to understand. There is a "sources" list that provides some Web site information for the reader who would like to learn more about a few of the stories. This is an informative book about man's best friend that animal lovers will enjoy reading. 2003, HarperCollins Publishers,
