Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Instructions for drawing eight different dog breeds—dachshund, poodle, German shepherd, boxer, Yorkshire terrier, Labrador retriever, beagle and golden retriever—are presented in a picture book format. The opening pages depict an array of artistic tools, including colored pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, paper, and pencils. The accompanying instructions advise the child artist to read all the steps and look at the pictures, and then use a pencil to lightly draw the preliminary lines and shapes shown in red, which will be erased later. Then, lines shown in blue are to be drawn. Those lines change to black. Without a great deal of patience and practice, it is unlikely that the child's drawings will look like the finished illustrations (even armed with many colored pencils). Accessories are depicted, including collars, bows, bones, and instructions in shading. This book is part of the "Ready, Set Draw!" series. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4–A bright, harmonious color scheme and catchy titles make this series catnip for the artistically inclined. Little to no contextual information is included, in favor of loading each book with 8-to-10 step-by-step drawings for kids to duplicate. Single-subject titles such as Cats and Horses demonstrate how to draw a variety of breeds in a variety of poses. The gendered titles include some lessons that both sexes will enjoy: Boy Stuff includes a dragon and Girl Stuff teaches how to draw a soccer player. Unfortunately, the instructional diagrams can be frustrating. The first few steps, in which the artist builds an armature of simple shapes, are easy, but most children will find the outlines that the artist uses to join the shapes and define the drawing difficult to duplicate. Secondary purchases where interest dictates.
