This collection of stories recounts and follows up on 15 of the most memorable dogs to appear on "Dogtown," including a grieving Weimaraner who needs a new family to love, an elderly Chow Chow with a mysterious neurological condition, and a shy pit bull suffering from popular misconceptions of breed brutality. The stories are told with much contribution from the passionate, patient staffers, and run alongside a charming collection of photos showcasing the dogs at their most expressive.     The Stories Behind the Dogs

    Dogtown is a no kill sanctuary for abused, abandoned, and unwanted dogs. As author Stefan Betchel notes:

    Many animals who come streaming into Dogtown are like a throng of mute refuges - tattered and torn, injured in both body and spirit, having survived grim hoarding houses, dog fighting rings, overcrowded shelters, or simple neglect and homelessness

    Notably, Dogtown has provided a home to many of the dogs abused in Michael Vick's now defunct dog fighting operation. But whether famous or anonymous, every dog has a story. Many of these stories are shared in this compilation book.

    All of the stories are compelling. However the stories of Bruno and Mr. Bones probably best illustrate Dogtown's unique mission of serving dogs in all stages of life. Bruno, an ailing elderly dog, was dumped at an overcrowded shelter. When a caring shelter volunteer persuaded Dogtown to take him, Bruno's luck changed for the better. As one Dogtown employee prophetically reflected at the time, "here at the sanctuary it's quality over quantity and Bruno is definitely a dog that has a potential to have a quality life, even if it turns out to be a short one." While Bruno's time at Dogtown was brief, it was packed with quality. In contrast to Bruno, Mr. Bones was a longtime resident at Dogtown. When he finally found his forever home four months before passing away, his owner confessed "if I had him only one day, it was worth it. He was something special."

    Awesome! Must Read for Any Animal Lover!!

    Having been involved in animal rescue for the last 10 years here in Michigan and having had visited Best Friends 2 years ago, I was so excited to see this book. I had only to read a few chapters before I went back to the store and bought books for the volunteers in our rescue group as Christmas presents. I never tire of of reading all the wonderful happy endings for the animals that would have not had a 2nd chance at life if not for Best Friends. I especially loved the stories written by the Dogtown "cast" as well.

    This is a must read for any animal lover and for anyone involved in animal rescue!!!

    I LOVE YOU DOGTOWN!!!

    Dogtown is one of the best sanctuarys in the USA. I read this book 6 to 7 times and still read it. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS YOU CAN BUY!!!!!!

    Great book for all...

    Dogtown is an excellent book, well written, very informative and gives the true feeling that you are in Dogtown. This is a terrific book for all animal loving people!!
