Children's Literature - Raina SedoreSomeone is turning the Avengers against themselves! When members of The Avengers turn up missing, Miss America and Golden Girl are concerned. Turns out, their missing teammates are being transported against their will through time! One by one, The Avengers are succumbing to the control of The Puppetmaster, a villain who commands superheroes using surrogates which are a cross between marionettes and voodoo dolls. When Miss America and Golden Girl find themselves transported to the 21st century, they meet Spiderman, Wolverine, and other modern members of the Avengers team. The climax of this volume is an epic battle between The Avengers and members of The Invaders who are already under The Puppetmaster's control. Engagingly written and cleanly illustrated, this tale is a fun introduction to the Marvel universe. Along with familiar (and recent movie star) characters like Captain America and Spiderman, we are introduced to more obscure superheroes such as the Sub-Mariner and the Whizzer (Wolverine thinks the Whizzer's name is hilarious). Although the story fits within the larger Marvel storyline, readers new to the superhero realm are able to follow with little inference. The reinforced binding of this edition is a welcome format for a medium so often rendered in cheap paperback. Particularly during a year when The Avengers are sweeping the box office, this is an essential addition to the superhero collections of every library serving children.
