Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Managing money is not easy for many people, so you can never start to soon understanding its value and how to manage your own money. Income can be obtained in several ways—allowance, working, or receiving gifts. The text describes what to think about when you have some money. Do you want to spend it all, save it all, spend some, save some, give some away or some combination of the preceding. The concept of cash flow is introduced and how important it is to keep a journal of expenses. It might be interesting to make a list of the things that you might like to buy and what they cost and then take this list and prioritize it. Most people cannot have everything they want, but managing money can lead to success in purchasing items immediately or in the future. The book addresses long and short term goals and the importance of saving even if it is a small amount. One really interesting point which goes beyond money is to avoid late fees—paying fines for not returning books or video games on time. This is something that will be even more important later in life and it is a very good lesson to learn while growing up. Readers also learn about the various places where money can be saved and the utility of checking and saving accounts and the dangers of credit and debit cards. Finally there are tips for shopping smart and the advantage of saving receipts and last but not least is a mention of sharing money or charity. In addition to a glossary that defines the bolded words in the text, there is a list of books and web sites for more information, an index and brief blurb about the author and a link to his web site. My only quibble with the list of books is the lack of publication dates. The series would be quite useful in a classroom or school library and even a public library. Part of the "Slim Goodbody's Life Skills 101" series. Listed as Guided Reading "P." Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
