Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Americans have long been fascinated by their country's First Ladies. Dolley Madison, the spunky wife of America's fourth President, may be part of the reason why. A friendly woman and stylish hostess who was popular in the capital's social circles, Dolley oversaw the decorating of the White House, making it a sensational attraction as well as a home. When the building was under siege by British soldiers, Dolley refused to leave until she saw to it that important artifacts were saved. It is the story of this decision that has made Dolley a poster child for quick thinking and courageous acts, so it is only appropriate that Jan Mader includes it here. Unfortunately, the text includes little more than this story, in spare detail, and recognition of some milestones in Dolley Madison's life. While the limited length and vocabulary of this book make it appropriate for a very young audience, and the full-color illustrations throughout are a nice touch, the book ultimately fails to flesh out one of the country's beloved icons. Readers will surely need to refer to the additional resources listed at the book's end.
