Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This is an engaging, popular account of the author's two-year dolphin research dissertation project at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Captured off Tampa Bay in July 1988, two Atlantic bottlenose dolphins were transported to California, where the author and colleagues recorded their sounds, movement patterns, echolocation abilities, and social interactions, as well as trained them to carry out various tasks. Careful attention was devoted to easing the animals' transition between the wild and captivity, as well as to follow-up on their reacclimation to the wild from the time of their release in 1990 through early 1995. Howard discusses and reevaluates the work of John C. Lilly (Man and Dolphin, 1961. o.p.) in light of new animal behavior discoveries; she addresses the objections of animal-rights activists and acknowledges the findings of her major professor, Kenneth S. Norris (Dolphin Societies, LJ 6/15/91). The two dolphins are depicted as distinct individuals with varying temperaments and abilities, yet they are not anthropomorphized. The book would have benefited from a short, annotated bibliography, but it is suitable for public libraries and undergraduate collections.-Judith B. Barnett, Pell Marine Science Lib., Univ. of Rhode Island, Kingston
