Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Riley is a child who loves adventure, so when his Uncle Max invites him to go along on a trip to the Tahitian Island of Moorea to visit Dr. Michael Pool, an expert on spinner dolphins, how can he refuse? The trip will enable Riley to see dolphins in the wild. As it turns out, dolphins aren't the only thing Riley and his family experience. Surfing lessons, watching native dances, and sampling the local delicacy, breadfruit, are some of his other island adventures. Diving among coral reefs and humpback whale-watching fill their days until Uncle Max and Dr. Pool discover some dolphins trapped in a lagoon. If they don't return to the open ocean, they won't find the food they need and could starve. Will Riley be able to help free the dolphins? This book combines real photography with cartoon drawings of Riley and his family and friends. Its format includes boxed facts, pages of further information such as maps, and a glossary, plus markers to look for online (www.adventuresofriley.com, a free educational website). A NAPA Honor book and award winner of USABookNews.com, Riley's adventures have another advantage: a percentage of royalties from the sale of this book goes to the Smithsonian's educational programs, Wildlife Conservation Society, and World Wildlife Fund. While young readers will probably enjoy the cluttered format and bright colorful cartoon illustrations, and, with patience, learn a lot about tracking dolphins in the wild, the disjointed text and lack of transition between pages makes it difficult to read.
Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Riley from the "Adventures of Riley" series is off to another exotic locale with his Uncle Max, Aunt Martha, and cousin, Alice. On the title page, a letter from Uncle Max foreshadows Riley's trip to Moorea Island in French Polynesia. Once the group arrives at the island, they are greeted by Dr. Poole, who whisks them off to see the dolphins in the lagoon. The story moves quickly from one event to the next while providing information about the dolphins and other marine life. The climax of the story is about rescuing the dolphins that are trapped in the lagoon. Readers will find insets with some facts about different sea animals along with brief information about plants. Between the book's end pages of marine animals, there are brightly colored illustrations placed on the photographs of the tropical scenery. In the back of the book, readers will find a glossary along with the website address of Riley's World where there are additional activities for exploration. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
