Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kim Harris Thacker
Dolphins live together in groups called "pods." This and other basic facts about dolphins and dolphin life can be found in this installment of the "Seedlings" series. This book contains vivid photographs and is written in a very simplistic tone, which is appropriate for children who are not yet reading as well as very early readers. While the table of contents and the words listed in the glossary seem somewhat arbitrarily chosen, teachers and parents will appreciate the "Read More" and "Web Sites" sections at the end of the book, which list additional resources for those who are interested in learning more about dolphins. Also of note is the compact size of the book. While many picture books can be unwieldy in the hands of young children, this book is small enough for even the youngest reader to handle with ease, while also being large enough that the gorgeous photos that accompany the text really stand out. Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
Dolphins have always been considered the friend of humans. Stories abound of rescue by a dolphin. In a story from folklore, a man jumped overboard to escape from men who wanted to hurt him. A dolphin carried him on his back to shore. Like whales, dolphins have blowholes on top that open to take in air. They swallow mackerels, squid and crabs without even chewing. Baby dolphins stay close to their mothers until they are six years old. They often swim close to shore and people can watch them jumping and playing happily. Their clicking and whistling sounds are talking to each other to share information as to the locations of fish. Irresistible, large pages with colored pictures will capture the interest of the youngest reader. The bottlenose dolphins seem to smile and are photographed in their own world. Included is an index and further reading suggestions. Part of the "Amazing Animals" series. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
