Naples Daily News
. . . offers readers everything they wanted to know about dolphins but didn't know whom to ask.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
I was surprised to learn that there are more than thirty species of dolphin and that they come in a variety of colors and live in waters that vary from salty seas to fresh water rivers. Many discoveries have been made about these creatures, their navigation skills, communications systems and social skills, but much remains to be learned. Wilson provides plenty of scientific information as well as a look at the dolphin's life cycle. He then takes readers on a visit to different dolphin habitats ranging from those who live in the greater oceans, those who cling to the coasts and those who live in rivers. In addition, he has included a chapter about the dangers dolphins face such as pollution and being entangled in fish nets; another chapter focuses on research. The final chapter contains suggestions for getting involved in dolphin watching, volunteering to assist with research, and helping these wonderful creatures remain safe in the wild. Numerous full-page photographs of dolphins appear throughout the book. The backmatter includes a reading list, classification of toothed cetaceans, dolphin facts, and an index. Yet another excellent book from Voyageur.

Marine zoologist Wilson gives a general reader's overview of oceanic, coastal, and river dolphins. He goes on to discuss beach strandings, dolphin research and conservation, how researchers keep track of individual dolphins, and dolphin watching. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
