Overview

When twenty-something political fundraiser Olivia Greenley is recruited by her close friend Jacob Harriston to join the Presidential campaign of Georgia Governor Landon Taylor, she is intoxicated by optimism and opportunity. Taylor’s commitment to social equality and economic responsibility in the post-housing-bubble era is palpable. Sacrificing her sleep, comfort and income are certain to help make the world a better place. Right?

Domestic Affairs: A Campaign Novel vividly captures the fervor and idealism of campaign life—as well as the disillusionment staffers feel when told to make the inevitable compromises. Leaving a meeting with foreclosure victims to hop onto a private jet is one thing, but how to justify dining at a $2,000-a-plate dinner knowing how many lunches the money could buy for at-risk kids? How far does one go when the ends appear to justify the means? And what’s a girl to do when the most charming, erudite, capable and ostensibly honorable man in the free world wants to take her to bed (but he’s married and her boss)? How does it feel to keep the biggest secret of her life from her best friend and coworker, even as the three of them spend every waking hour together? The tension between characters, right and wrong, and between success and implosion are taut.

A terrifically fun read that gives the reader a taste of life in politics (the good, the bad, and the ugly). I particularly loved the way the author weaved together so many of the recent political scandals into one cohesive story (think Law & Order’s “ripped from the headlines”). A great page-turning addition to anyone’s summer reading list… or any other season for that matter!

Political scandals ripped from the headlines! The reviewer below is totally right. I was reading Siegel's novel and had the exact same thought... this is JUST like what Law & Order does! The novel is JUICY and I personally couldn't put it down. Anyone interested in learning more about the inner workings of political campaigns (or who just likes a great story) should read this book!

A great summer beach read!! I read it over the weekend, completely ignoring my family - my husband accused me of having a 'Domestic Affair' with this book! Ha

Ms. Siegel does a great job of pulling back the curtain on a way of life that many of us could only ever dream about living. Loved every page!

    A great read!
Couldn't put it down. Learned a ton about campaigns, fundraising and the underbelly of politics. I don't normally write reviews, but after reading the book I could not understand how one person here gave it one star? The author tells a very entertaining, informative and emotional story.

Let Me Save You the Trouble...

Because you have read, seen, and heard this same story hundreds of time; given the author's background I was hoping for something new and original--doesn't happen. This is all cliche: young idealist smacked into reality after an affair with her dream politician shows him to be sleazy...well, duh.

Further hard to believe elements are that the protagonist, Olivia, is supposedly this young (27) New York City savvy veteran of political campaigns but falls apart under the spell of a Southern (Clintonesque, Edwardsesque--take your pick) governor and is just shattered when she learns what he really is. So much for all that exerience and toughness...

It's just way too hard to swallow that someone this young is given the reins of financing a huge presidential campaign yet acts like she has no idea what political dollars mean as she freaks out at having to earn millions in a short period of time, is startled at the unethical, corners-shaving activities... and oh my, she cries a lot. Savvy? Hardly.

Then she jumps into an affair with her 'dream' politician despite his being married with kids--because after all, the wife is a harpy--only fleeting moments of conscience quickly erased by the squealings and excitement of a 16 year old at the prom. Oh--then she cries a lot when realizes the affair was a bad idea...except (SPOILER)...after she decides she can, ever see him again--well, a donor offers a new wardrobe and a private plane to, guess what--see him again, so she does...

This could go on forever...save the money and rent "Ides of March"--George Clooney's (Academy Award nominated) film on the exact, same idea. Except there you get a really well done film despite the age-old story AND Clooney AND a shirtless Ryan Gosling. THERE'S a winner!

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! EXCELLENT READ

Excellent read! Bridget captures the hectic life of a political fund raiser so well. You truly feel for the main character in all her struggles. This book is fun, witty and charming. Couldn't put it down once I started to read it. I highly recommend Domestic Affairs for anyone looking to be entertained and educated.

Grays the line between fact and fiction- in a good way

What do I really want in a summer book? I want to be entertained. I want to smile a lot andto continue to be intrigued as the pages turn. This book accomplishes all of that. Apparently, the author comes from a political background with plenty of first-hand knowledge into the goings-ons of how personal and professional lives interweave in that world- and she definitely uses her experiences to create a close-enough-to-reality-that-you-can-almost-pick-your-own-real-life-characters that it makes it all the more interesting and entertaining throughout. Well written, insightful, and without question a very good read.

I just completed the read of this book in record time. The gravitational force that prevents you from putting the book down is stupefying. Olivia is an erudite character with discordant feelings towards a political campaign that any reader can identify with. I think this book is a must read for political junkies, those interested in American politics, and are anyone willing to take the deep dive into the fascinating, but sometimes sordid affairs of political campaigns.
