I'll be honest and say that I got Robert's first three "Apt" stories because they were free. I was looking around for some new zombie stories and there they were. Did I mention that they were FREE? Almost immediately I felt comfortable reading the stories. I didn't get characters confused. I didn't have to wait for the action to begin. I didn't have to read halfway through the story to figure out what was going on. I was basically hooked from the first page on. When i was done with those three stories, I bought Don of the Living Dead and dived right in before withdrawal had a chance to hit me. The Apt stories tie in with Don and the transition was painless.
Don had me hooked as well from beginning to end. It was, simply, a delight. The characters were all very human and very believable. You CARED about them. The whole read was a smooth ride with plenty of rollercoaster highs and lows. The lows serving to generate anxiety over the next big climb up. And the apexes achieved their goal with no trouble by plunging you down unmercifully in sheer safety bar-clenching joyous terror.
If you're a zombie fan, you owe it to yourself to read Rob's three Apt stories. What have you got to lose? They're FREE! Remember? All I'm curious about is not IF you'll read Don, but how long it'll take you to start reading it as soon as you finish the stories. It took me about a whole three minutes. How long can YOU hold out?

As an avid Zombie aficionado, anything by this author is great. I've read a lot of zombie books and watched just about every zombie movie out there and this guy knows how to tell a story. Why do we like to watch and read about zombies ---- to see and read about them! His stories are filled with the creatures, unlike a lot of other authors where zombies seem to be filler! Robert is a talented writer and his stories just seem to flow. His books hold my interest! If you want to read a good book, read this one.

Don Carver is a bit of a loser. A divorced accountant for a pharmaceutical company, he lives in a studio apartment, has no luck with women and is sitting on the toilet when the zombapocalypse comes knocking on his stall door. Although Don isn’t the typical hero, he picks up a few stragglers and makes his way to his ex-wife’s house to pick up his son and escape the city.
There are some surreal and funny moments in this book – the characters, particularly Don, are realistic and don’t have the clichéd ‘hero’ tag. As the story progresses, more of Don’s past is revealed, giving more insight into the character, and other characters are developed into atypical zombie-survivor types and I wanted all of them (perhaps with the exception of Don’s crazy-ex) to make it all the way through to the end. The cause of the zombie virus is explained in good detail, not overwhelmingly science-y but enough to give credibility to the story.
Don of the Living Dead did lose some momentum in the middle of the book and felt a little like going through the motions rather than nail-biting action, but there were some memorable moments that kept me reading just to see how this would all turn out. And it turned out to be a proper ending – hurrah!
There are some spelling/grammatical errors in this book, not enough to make it unreadable but a good editorial or proofreading eye could make this into an excellent book. Mr DeCoteau has a definite future in zombie/horror writing with some unique ideas and a gutsy writing style.

Robert is an awesome story teller and has a way of making his characters very real. The story has the ultimate anti-hero thrust into the middle of a zombie apocalypse. It has dry humor and terrifying horror. A must read for any fan of the genre.

Great zombie story! Unlikely hero in an overweight accountant. I laughed in places. You would have to be a zombie not to cry at the ending!
I live in WA State, so fun to recognize areas described. The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is because of the massive amounts of typos/grammatical errors. Writer is great storyteller, but needs to be a grammar class.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. One minute I'm wiping the tears of laughter from my eyes and the next minute I'm turning all the lights in the house on. A few pages later I laugh so hard I lose my page and then I have to find my box of tissues. Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland were great funny movies and if you liked those, you'll love this book. One thing this book has got that the movies couldn't quite pull off is that this book is really terrifying in some places. I read a lot of this author and if you are into a more traditional and serious Apocalyptic style zombie Mr. DeCoteau does great at that too...check out The New Days: The First Son The New Days: The First Son

I read a sample of this book over at Smashwords and liked it. Now that I have read all of it I absolutely LOVE it. Its so funny and scary at the same time. fast paced as well. I can't stop reading it. I can't wait for another book by Robert DeCoteau. I do believe I have a new favorite author.
