Done Me Wrong: Ember Beat, Vol. 2 (1965-1966)

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide
Fantastic Voyage's series of reissues collecting highlights from the catalog of Ember Records continues with this disc. Ember was one of Great Britain's most successful independent record labels in the 1960s and '70s, and while they were cautious at first about dipping their toes into rock & roll, in time they warmed to the sound and the material here is noticeably more lively than that appears on Tell Me: Ember Beat, Vol. 1. You won't find any manic rave-ups in the manner of the Pretty Things or the Yardbirds, but while this is polished beat music, the tempos are faster and the music tighter than the earlier set, and John Barry's eccentric easy listening material doesn't make the cut this time. You won't find any manic rave-ups in the manner of the Pretty Things or the Yardbirds, but while this is polished beat music, the tempos are faster and the music tighter than the earlier set, and John Barry's eccentric easy listening material doesn't make the cut this time. Chad & Jeremy are easily the best known act on Done Me Wrong: Ember Beat, Vol. 2 as they were on Vol. 1, as their five tunes find them in more sophisticated and pop-friendly surroundings than the mellower sounds of their earliest singles though their wistful harmonies are still up front, while the Washington DC's are represented by three tunes from an album Ember put together to capitalize on an early Dave Clark Five single in their catalog while the DC5 got billing over the Washington DC's on the sleeve, the former act was represented by just two songs!. The Midnights show plenty of high spirits on their selections especially "Show Me Around", the Couriers deliver tight rock & roll with a strong R&B edge especially on the lead-off number "Done Me Wrong" and Earl Preston's Realms sound solid on the obviously fake live cover of "Daddy Rollin' Stone." And while Ember's attempts to corner the market on Irish Beat in the wake of Them's international success weren't commercially successful, the numbers from Belfast acts the Alleykatz, the Bats, Just Five, the Luvin' Kind, and the People are strong, nervy stuff that will please those looking for somewhat harder stuff. With the exception of one tune by the Couriers noted in the booklet, the source tapes sound good and the audio is quite good for the period, while Lorne Murdoch contributes informative liner notes; folks with an interest in the less well-traveled avenues of British rock of the '60s would do well to give this album a listen.
