The Final Chapter in the FBI's Greatest Mafia Sting-with Shocking Declassified Details from the Donnie Brasco Operation and a Timeline of the Fall of the Mafia. When FBI Special Agent Joe Pistone began what was supposed to be a six-month operation infiltrating New York's Bonanno crime family in 1975, he had no idea what was about to happen. Posing as jewel thief "Donnie Brasco," Pistone would spend the next six years undercover in the Family, witnessing-and sometimes participating in-the Mafia's gruesome activities while gathering enough evidence to send over 200 gangsters to jail. Overview

Pistone told his story in the 1988 book Donnie Brasco-a New York Times bestseller and later a feature film starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino. But because of pending trials at the time of publication, many details of the alleged crimes were omitted. Now, in Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business, Pistone for the first time reveals with great detail the horrific deeds of wiseguys Tony Mirra, Lefty Ruggiero, Sonny Black, and the rest of the cold-blooded Bonanno crew. He puts the operation into historical perspective, detailing the timeline of Mafia trials from 1981 through 2005 that crippled the New York City crime family. He also recounts his experiences after the operation, his time on the Hollywood set with Pacino and Depp, and other undercover operations through present day.

A tense, thrilling account of the greatest infiltration ever by a federal agent into the most brutal gang of killers in the world, Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business is the final chapter in the story of a real American hero.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Crime may not pay, but it certainly makes great books and movies. Nothing proves that better than the thrilling epic of Joseph Pistone, a "Jersey boy" FBI agent who spent six years undercover in the Mafia, posing as Bonanno family mobster Donnie Brasco. After he came up for air in 1981, more than 200 wiseguys ended up in the slammer on the strength of his testimony. His 1988 memoir became a coast-to-coast bestseller, and the 1997 film Donnie Brasco, starring Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, became a box office hit. In this book, Pistone utilizes newly declassified information to fill in the details of his remarkable anti-Mob campaign.
Kirkus Reviews
The man who went undercover as Donnie Brasco acts as tour guide to the downfall of the New York Mafia: a long-coming event he was instrumental in bringing about. To hear former FBI agent Pistone (Donnie Brasco, not reviewed) put it, his dangerous, six-year undercover operation in the New York Mob couldn't have happened before or since. Prior to the early-'70s, the Hooverite agency was still too suspicious of the whole (then-)unconventional idea, and after 1981, when Pistone began delivering reams of damning testimony in one RICO case after another, the fatally wounded families became even more suspicious of outsiders. Still living in an undisclosed location and having knocked out a few crime novels in the past few years-apparently, he left the Feds before getting that pension-Pistone now gives the full scoop on the aftermath of his years undercover, and how the work he began essentially demolished New York's five families. The going will be a bit rough at first for those unfamiliar with Donnie Brasco; readers may find themselves lost in details (was that the Lucchese or Bonanno family? Is that Sonny Red or Sonny Black?). But Pistone proves to be a smart and pugnacious writer, unafraid to repeat himself where necessary, and none too worried about offending targets of ridicule; the latter category includes clueless FBI supervisors, a Mafia composed of bumbling and sadistic sociopaths and the Godfather-loving clueless who romanticize them. An epilogue lists the Mafiosi Pistone associated with while undercover and who have since been whacked, many because of their association with him-there are 15 names. A tough and refreshingly unsentimental overview of what is essentially the end of theAmerican Mafia.

    Fuggedaboutit

Glad I only spent 5 bucks for this book. It's certainly not terrible, but, I lost interest somewhere between the first and second chapters. It's not as if the subject matter is boring, it's not. But, Pistone writes and thinks like a true cop. All the wiseguys are bad. The FBI always wins and, when they lose, it's someone else fault (either a "fluke," a bad jury/juror or a bad prosecutor, etc.) Pistone's view, here, is a cop's view and it grows boring after awhile. His views are just too black and white for me and, although I finished the book, I certainly had to force myself to do it.

    Interesting and Insightful

Like many, I have a deep interest in learing about the unknown. Reading "Donny's" account of his life in undercover creates a deep appreciation of all the he and his family gave up for us to have a safer world. The Saprano's is a look at the "other side" but only from an entertainment point of view. This book allows the "nice" immage to be stripped away and the ugly side to come into view.

    If you have....

If you have ever wondered about the life of 'The Wiseguy,' whether or not you are of Italian decent or not, this is a remarkable read. I saw the movie first and have not read the first book of the same title, though am glad and pleased to have read this one. Mr. Pistone has done a pairamount job with his writing and telling of his life undercover. I highly recommened this book.
