More About This Book

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Angelica Delgado
Donovan is an average fourteen-year-old boy. He enjoys watching Saturday morning cartoons, making new friends, and having adventures; however, Donovan is unique in that he was born with Down's Syndrome. This means that while his internal voice flows as well as any other narrator, his external voice is never as expressive as he would like it to be, much to his consternation. When a weekend chore unearths a buried treasure, Donovan and pals must work together to solve a mystery and clear a neighbor's sullied name. In its favor, Donovan and the Big Hole has brisk plot pacing, short chapters, and offers the singular point of view of a special-needs protagonist. Sadly, typos and ridiculously simplistic line drawings all scream low-quality vanity press. The artist's renderings of people are, quite frankly, scary. Mulvihill forgoes the opportunity to illustrate the principles of a lever or lasso but inexplicably includes a magnified handwriting sample. The book jacket dictates what positive character traits the reader should take away from his or her experience to the point of being didactic and insulting. Characters are one dimensional; the villain is so smarmy that the reader half expects him to cackle and twirl an oily mustache. The inspirational message, and even the tie-in to Texas history, has an odd, tacked-on feel. Given the price tag, it is difficult to imagine librarians purchasing this, yet it is even more difficult to imagine this checking out, even with extremely strategic booktalking. WOW! What a wonderful peek into world of Down syndrome!

Never having the opportunity to spend much time around a Down syndrome person I was thrilled to finally read a book written in 1st person about a young man who has Down syndrome. It takes a minute to understand his tone of speaking, but by making the effort the reward was oh sooooooo rewarding!
From this moment on I will never feel sorry for someone who has a child with Down syndrome. They are uniquely warm and passionate about life. Donovan's insights are amusing and captivating. His thoughts about what happened that summer are very special. After reading Donovan & the Big Hole I feel like I know someone with Down syndrome!
