I recently installed Firefox on my PC and regretted not having made the switch from Internet Explorer sooner. This book is an excellent 'user's manual,' detailing the various features of this browser. And it's one 'manual' that's easy to follow and discover why the author feels strongly about Firefox. The first chapter is a 'history' of the so-called 'browser wars,' explaining how IE came to be so dominant, along with the origins of web browsers. The next chapter describes how to install and configure Firefox, which is fairly easy to do. Subsequent chapters discuss Firefox's features, its 'Extensions' (or plug ins) and themes (aka 'skins'), and the book's final chapter is devoted to 'power users,' although with a little practice most readers could learn the items described here. One thing the book does describe are the various ways you can customize your own version of Firefox, and that's fun in of itself. I usually have trouble trying to 'customize' any of my software, and clearly with Firefox, it's easy to do. I've already added ForecastFox (a weather forecast tool) and added two or three extra search engines, in addition to the ones that come with Firefox. If you have 'made the switch' to Firefox or are thinking about it, this is a great book to buy.

Is there an alternative to Internet Explorer on a Microsoft machine? This book certainly claims so. It is a strong endorsement of the new Firefox. Whether or not this might be so to you, the book is certainly a well put explanation of Firebox. In some ways better than a standard text on a given computer program. Have you ever noticed that most of those pointedly ignore the details of a competing product? So that a book on Oracle's 10g might shun any nitty gritty comparison with IBM's DB2. Here, there is very pointedly a detailed feature comparison with IE. Not all the features of IE or Firebox are covered. But enough to give you an idea of the differences. When comparisons are made, there is no mincing about. Quite aside from all this, the book also discusses Firebox being able to easily handle the wildly popular RSS and blog feeds.
