Meet the Author

Paula Begoun

Paula Begoun is known worldwide as The Cosmetics Cop for her role as a consumer advocate and investigative researcher on skin care and makeup. From an early age, Paula struggled with skin issues including acne and debilitating bouts of eczema. Frustrated by the ineffective treatments and products at the cosmetic counters and from dermatologists, Paula started examining the scientific research herself. Soon, she solved her skin problems by following published research on how skin works and which cosmetic ingredients really work. Determined to help others find the best products for their skin, Paula has written 19 books on cosmetics and is one of the best-selling beauty authors of all time. Her books Blue Eyeshadow Should Be Illegal, Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, and The Original Beauty Bible have helped women all over the world take the best possible care of their skin, while exposing what the cosmetics industry doesn’t want you to know. In 1995, Paula launched Paula’s Choice which offers skin-care solutions for everything from acne to wrinkles. Bryan Barron has been working closely with Paula for 12 years. He spent many years working for various cosmetic lines in the retail sector, as a makeup artist, educator, and manager. Since then, he has played an integral role in subsequent editions of that book along with The Beauty Bible. Bryan also served as co-writer and editor of Paula’s former newsletter Cosmetics Counter Update. He currently manages and writes content for the Beautypedia and Paula’s Choice Web sites and continues to evaluate the latest research with Paula and the Paula’s Choice Research Team.

A Michigan native, Bryan has lived in the Seattle area long enough to consider the Northwest home. Along with his husband Ben, he is a doting “Dad” to three Pomeranians, one of whom routinely accompanies him to the office.

Desiree Stordahl is an ongoing contributor to articles concerning skin care and makeup at CosmeticsCop.com and has been trained under the personal guidance of Paula. Her writing flows from her passion for researching the cosmetics industry combined with her desire to help people find the best products for their skin. As part of the Paula’s Choice Research Team, Stordahl’s role includes evaluating cosmetic ingredients, investigating the physiological effects of skin-care products, and writing product reviews. She also travels around the world with Paula as a brand ambassador for Paula’s Choice, educating consumers near and far about skin care.

Stordahl was born and raised in Zillah, Washington and now calls the Seattle area home. She enjoys planning trips with her husband Jason, doing makeovers, and testing out her cooking skills on anyone who is willing to try her meals.

    DO NOT BUY IN NOOK FORMAT!!!

    I love the Cosmetics Cop books - very honest, well researched and useful information. I purchase every new edition. HOWEVER, I wish I'd bought the hard copy and not e-book. So far I am enjoying my Nook Color, but unfortunately this book did not format correctly. The symbols all came up as question marks. Also, you can't navigate to a specific brand and have to scroll through all the pages to find what you are looking for. I don't know if I can return a Nook book, but I'm certainly going to try.

    Read the book before believing the false negative reviews

    I can't help but wonder if the bad reviews come from people in the advertising or cosmetic industries. First off, as much as Paula may have negative things to say, she backs up every word with scientific, documented research. She reads countless articles and journals written by scientists who study skin care concerns and products, and bases all of her work on that. She does not give just an opinion, but gives real knowledge. Most of the false advertising claims are garbage, not based on any documented research, and she is exposing that. Secondly, it's so convenient how you bash her for saying negative things about cosmetic companies, but you happen to leave out that she PRAISES thousands of their products as well. How many skincare companies do you know that take the time to recommend products from other companies? Even on her website where she sells her product line, she STILL talks about the newest products from other companies that she enjoys. She openly talks about the fact that she uses products from other lines on her own skin. Lastly, the only people who are most angry are those who work for cosmetic companies that make products with bogus claims that don't live up to their hype. Why don't you actually document and publish your 'research' so you can prove your products work? How arrogant to think that just because a company has a reputation, or simply because it charges a small fortune for its products, that it is exempt from criticsm and called out for the lies it feeds its consumers? Paula, march on.

    Very expensive!!

    I got this book on March of 2008 and some of the reviews were already out dated. With the industry putting new products on the counter almost every day it is very difficult to keep up with it. So in my opinion an easy solution would be to make more than one volume a year, this away it would cost less (let's hope) and it would be smaller!!
    Have anyone who owes this book actually try to go shopping caring it? That thing weights at least 3lbs!! If you anything like me, who loves to shop for different things at the same time and might get distract by another products that you may not be familiar with, it would make sense to have the book with you, but this thing is simply to big and heavy to carry around!
    Also, I thing Paula should have rated her products, because at the end of the day, she felt not problem in referring them to us!
    I have no problem on paying for the book, but I do have a problem with paying every year for the same info on an unpractical book!

    Not helpful

    I do not find this book an effective tool. I only found it confusing and full of subjective opinions. It was not helpful to me when I was happy with my skin care line and it was not helpful when I was looking for something else. There are only a few products at most in each skin care line that are 'approved'. I first read an earlier edition in my 20's when I was very happy with my skin care line thinking that there would be wonderful things written about it. I was completely discouraged after reading the negative ratings and I actually stopped using my favorite products! But I couldn't find anything better! A friend of mine recently gave me this edition and I find it is no more helpful. The basics of the book haven't changed but I have. I now, in my 30's, trust my own experience.

    a must if you buy makeup and skin care stuff

    excellent updated overview of her previous tomes. I have two teen girls and between the three of us we all have different needs and preferences, all addressed here in clear, crisp prose. she offers rationale for her positions, not hyperbole. her suggested steps for various types of skincare issues are esp. good. an excellent author at the top of her game. happy to buy this book. I waste less money on products, get more for my money when making purchases and take better care of my skin thanks to Paula B.

    Truth about skincare

    FINALLY THE TRUTH ABOUT SKIN CARE PRODUCTS AND INGREDIENTS!!! Everything and anything you could possibly want to know about every brand you can think of and every ingredient. Check out her website at cosmeticcop.com. She is the real thing and only gives scientific evidence regarding products. She does have her own small line but does not push it and barely even mentions it which obviously tells you she truly cares about the truth and getting the public educated and not to waste their money on scams. If people don't know cosmetics and skin-care is not FDA regulated and they can tell you that an item is packed with vitamin C and it actually won't have any vitamin C in it at all. Or they can claim their lotion is for very dry skin and the main ingredient will be alcohol which is the most drying and irritating ingredient of all times. If you want the truth, Paula will give you the truth!!!!!!!!!!!

    Great book, not an AD!!!

    If you have read any of the books Paula wrote before this one, you would know that Paula told the truth about cosmetics before she had a line of her own. I think this book is great, as are all of her books!!

    Excellent! Hilarious!

    Paula tells it like is when so many cosmetics companies don't. She profiles a ton of different companies (including some I have never heard of) in a manner that I feel is fair. She is also pretty funny and scathing at times. When you consider the billions of dollars that women (myself included) spend on products that make a lot of claims - the industry needs to be taken down a notch or two. She discusses the claims that each makeup product or line makes, the appropriate skin care products for your skin type, products to avoid, ingredients in products, and company responses to her finished work and requests for information. Well done - Thanks.

    Annoying

    This author is very detailed in the products that she does not recommend, but what about the good products? Instead of listing all the bad products and wasting my time, she should have just put the effective products instead. Very annoying and preachy

    I love this book!

    This is the 3rd book I have purchased and always look forward to the new one. it really helps you see what products are worth spending money on and keeps you from wasting your money. She has really good no-nonsense advice!

    This book is informative to read.

    This book is useful in some way because it has most of the cosmetics listed. I don't think it useful because it overwhelming for an individual one actually has to looks really careful and when I said careful I mean flipping through each page. As far as organization it really hard to really know which is the best product because it listed by the best product to the worst but it listed from alphabet order of the of the cosmetic product. A lots of question in mind as far as bias. I was really look for the ingredient instant of opinion. To me this book just indicate the general description of the cosmetics of why the product is bad and why is good to use, but that just opinion. It doesn't really prove why is bad for like maybe compare the ingredient so that people would know. I feel it a waste of money buying this book when you can get most of the answer in her website and most of it is free.

    Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter without Me

    The information Paula Begoun provides in the book about skin care and cosmetic products is priceless! She has researched the products, their ingredients, and the effects they have on skin appearance and health; I doubt I'll ever use another product on my face without the help of this book. The skin care/cosmetics aisles will no longer intimidate me; thank you, Paula!

    A must have for cosmetic "junkies"

    If you are wondering whether that $150.00 "life altering" face cream is worth the investment,
    then this is the book for you.
    Very helpful in guiding you to good cosmetic products of ALL price ranges.
    My only complaints were ; not EVERY product is reviewed (book would be a million pages long!)
    and,
    the "layout" is a little confusing.
    All in all, a helpful investment, for savvy cosmetics consumers.

    Confusing book

    The thing that I don't like about this book is that it can be very confusing. <BR/>Paula rated a lotion that I was interested poor ,then I searched on sephora. com and more than 1,200 people loved the same lotion that she rated low. Another thing that I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK WAS THE FACT THAT PAULA was BRAGGING ABOUT HER SKIN CARE LINE,( ALWAYS THE BEST PRODUCT IN EVERYTHING) I DON'T KNOW , THAT'S SOMETHING THAT REALLY bothered me, she kind of seems PHONY to me.
