Don't Leave Without Me
“Don’t Leave Without Me” is a love story that begins on the night of Robert Kennedy’s assassination. Doug Bennett is a columnist for a major newspaper in New Jersey who interviewed Sen. Kennedy a few months before his death. Doug also is passionately opposed to the Vietnam War and often writes negative columns about it. Because of his devotion to his job, his marriage with his wife Marion is falling apart. After the Kent State shootings, Doug has had enough and decides to leave both his marriage, his job, and his country. In departing, he is joined at the last minute by Lisa Manet, a young troubled girl who had been living with them. First, they relocate in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where Doug is able to secure a job as the editor of the city magazine. In Vancouver, a love affair between Doug and Lisa blossoms and grows. Then, after the Vietnam War is over, they moved to a forested area, where they build a house, outside of a small town in northern Montana. Doug becomes editor of the weekly newspaper there, but the introspective and moody Lisa gradually descends into a form of madness. Seeing the beginning of an end, Doug begs her not to “leave without him”…
