From the Trade Paperback edition.

Megan is nervous about learning to ride a bike. What if she falls? Not to worry, as Daddy helps her get through the first big solo ride.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Learning to ride a two-wheeler is an indisputable milestone for kids, but Willis and Ross (previously teamed for What Did I Look Like When I Was a Baby?) mine it for even deeper emotional significance-with mixed results. Megan wants her father to teach her to ride her bike so she can "ride to you,/ From Mom's house over to yours." He agrees, and with the promise to his daughter that he "won't let go,/ Not until you say," she overcomes her last-minute fears: "I think I'm ready/ to go now, Dad./ Daddy, don't let go!/ Don't.../ Okay,/ you can let go now!" Set mostly in an urban park populated by cyclists of widely varying skills, Ross's fluid, editorial-style watercolors convey the heady sense of membership and mastery that courses through the novice cyclist (Megan imagines the park transformed into a path that winds past a tiger and a mandrill). But the book stumbles in the final pages, when Megan's achievement moves Daddy to tears. In the book's only close-up, the father's face turns a melancholy rose; as a teardrop descends his cheek, he makes the admission that "I was scared too today-/ Scared you would never come back to me/ Now that you can ride away." Megan calmly reassures her dad, but the ending makes the book into a sop to grownups rather than a triumph for Megan. Ages 4-8. (May) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
The British team of Willis and Ross here collaborate on their second book. This time it is a sweet foray into daughter-and-divorced-father relationships. The metaphor used is learning to ride a bicycle. Young Megan very badly wants to learn, but she's already scarred a knee. And besides, she is scared. Daddy is her hoped for support—and he comes through with flying colors as the two wander through town and parks in search of the perfect liftoff moment. Jeanne Willis's verse is non-intrusive and manages to be movingly sentimental, yet not mawkish. Tony Ross's pen-and-watercolor sketches are appropriately breezy with a nice touch of added whimsy. (There is a charming background story about a dog and cat chase that weaves between the main plot and has an equally moving dénouement.) Ross's style has been influenced by Quentin Blake, but gently so. Either as a relationship story or just a primer on how best to go about training for that first bike ride, this picture book is a winner. 2003, G. P. Putnam's Sons, Ages 3 to 6.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Megan wants to learn how to ride a bike so she can get from her mother's house to her father's all by herself. Her dad tells her that it is difficult to learn, "But the view when you get to the top of the hill,/And the feel of the wind in your hair!/And the freedom to go wherever you please/And to know you can get yourself there-/That must be worth a few little knocks/And maybe a bruise or two-." Megan gathers up her courage and gives it a try but warns her father not to let go. As they fly down the hill, Megan takes off by herself. Dad is a bit sad until she returns and gives him a great big hug. The whimsical watercolor illustrations are humorous and create a sense of movement throughout. This is a feel-good story that will be perfect for family storytimes as it reminds loved ones that it is necessary to let go of children and let them grow up, but that the love between parents and children will always remain.-Kristin de Lacoste, South Regional Public Library, Pembroke Pines, FL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Achieving the skill of riding a two-wheeled bike is the first step on the path to independence. Dad spends time with Megan in the park, supporting her with encouraging words and with his steady hands when she finally takes off on her own. Parallel emotions and concerns of father and daughter are expressed in the rhyming text as the theme of letting go is brought out in Megan's anxiety versus Dad's apprehensive uncertainty of the latitude that bike-riding will provide. Willis deftly brings it all together as she completes the circle of emotions by having Megan repeat the reassuring words that Dad says at the start of the bike lesson: "Daddy, I'm here. I won't let go, / Not until you say / Hold on tight. I love you, so / We'll do this together, okay?" Watercolors outlined in black ink reflect the active scenes, and close-ups of the characters figuratively evoke the sentiments involved. Wholesome fare for both parent and child. (Picture book. 5-7)
