Overview

n 2005, Tyler Perry took Hollywood by storm. The movie he wrote, produced, and starred in, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, opened number one at the box office and went on to gross more than $50 million. In its first week on sale, the DVD sold 2.4 million copies. At the same time, Perry was starring nightly across the country in a soldout stage show he'd also written, produced, and scored-Madea Goes to Jail-even as another one of his productions, Meet the Browns, was touring nationally. Every week in 2005, 35,000 people saw a Tyler Perry production. His second feature film, Madea's Family Reunion, opens in theaters in February 2006. Now, this triple-threat actor/playwright/director, has written his first book, and it features his most beloved, most irreverent creation: sixty-eight-year-old grandmother Madea Simmons.

Madea is at the center of all of Tyler Perry's work, and she's always unfailingly outspoken, dead-on, and hilarious. But in Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings, Madea shares more than she ever has before- about herself, and about what she thinks of everyone around her. The topics inimitably covered by Madea (a term of endearment for "Mother Dear") include love and marriage, child-rearing, etiquette and neighborliness, beauty tips, health tips, financial tips, the Bible and the church, and, of course, gun care. She's brazen, feisty, and never at a loss for words, but at the heart of everything she says- and at the heart of all of Perry's work-is a resounding message of faith and forgiveness.

Shockingly hilarious, surprisingly moving, and as rousing and inspiring as a great gospel show, Madea's words of wisdom, memories, and straight-up in-your-face advice will be cherished by Perry's numerous fans- and it all comes just in time for Mother's Day. Tyler Perry is about to take the publishing world by storm.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
At the center of Tyler Perry's comic extravaganza is Madea Simmons, a delightfully untamed, trash-talking, 68-year-old black grandmother. This foul-mouthed, pot-smoking, pistol-packing matriarch achieved film fame in Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion. In Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings, Madea dispenses strong opinions on love, marriage, church, the Bible, neighbors, bad blood, money, health, aging, and mortality.
Publishers Weekly
One could say that if the title of this book confuses you, then you probably shouldn't be reading it. But, as Madea helpfully suggests, "If you don't understand something I'm saying here and you're not black, you will have to ask somebody who is." Madea-Southern-speak for "mother dear"-is the fierce alter ego of Tyler Perry, who has paraded the marijuana-smoking, pistol-packing, trash-talking matron through a series of hit gospel plays and films. Although primarily a comic figure based on unapologetically crude behavior coming from a harmless-looking old lady, Madea is envisioned by Perry (who provides his own introduction before turning the reins over to his inner grandma) as a throwback to a time when strong matriarchs ruled the community. The result is a surprisingly fresh compilation of homespun advice-which Madea says the reader should take "at your own risk"-on love, sex, getting ahead in life and (strangely) the thousand-plus uses of Vaseline. Although veering dangerously close to serious at times, Perry litters Madea's anarchic, stage-ready monologues with hilariously bad quips along the lines of "the grass is always greener on the other side, but the water bill is higher." A true joy to read. You will get caught up in 'Madea'

Being one of Mr. Perry's biggest fans, I was anticipating the release of this book. I must say I was not dissapointed. Once again Madea has made us take a hard and comedic look at ourselves. I have now passed it on to my two teen-aged daughters to read and I know they will enjoy it as much as I did. Keep up the good work Tyler, and tell Madea 'You go Girl!'

If you loved the plays & the movies, check out the book

I have seen the plays, I have seen the movies, and I am looking forward to reading the book. Madea is such a fun loving character, at times she reminds me of my own grandmother. Just the facts of life she gives you. She is full of life and adventure, so you can't go wrong reading this book. It will more than likely have you crying one minute, and laughing the next, just like the plays, and movies.

You Have to See 'Madea' To Understand 'Madea'

I have pre-ordered this book which I have been anticipating since Tyler Perry announced that he was writing it. As a collecter of five of Tyler Perry's Plays on DVD: 'I Can Do Bad By Myself', 'Diary Of A Mad Black Woman', 'Madea's Family Reunion', 'Madea's Class Reunion', and 'Meet The Brown's' as well as 'Diary Of A Mad Black Woman' (the movie), you have to understand where this character is coming from. It used to be a time when the elderly women in our neighborhoods were highly respected. If one of them saw you doing wrong, they would speak to you about it and you'd better listen! She had no problem telling your parents that she had to speak to you. Growing up, we learned to respect our elders. It's like Tyler Perry has stated, and I'm paraphrasing it - We don't have many women around like 'Madea' anymore. Nowadays, grandmothers are their late 30's, in the clubs enjoying themselves. 'Madea's' character can be outrageous but this character has a heart. This is how Tyler Perry sees it, and how I know it to be. 'Madea's' approach is comedic and shocking at times, but when you really think about it, 'Madea' is just telling it just like it is. Back in the day, Black females were known to take off their earrings (and shoes too) before engaging in any altercation. That was just how it was. I'm sure that this book will make for entertaining as well as enlightening reading.

    Highly Recommended

This book is a MUST read. I saw myself 3 generations before me and my children and future grandchildren in this book. If you have ever seen any Madea movie movie or play you can hear her voice and see her talking to you as you read this serious, funny, and true commentary. I have finished it and have started passing it out for ALL the ladies in my family to read.
