Children's LiteratureFirst-grader Freddy Thresher has never been particularly interested in playing sports. However, when his best friend, Jessie, comes to school wearing a Hammerhead jersey from her peewee hockey team, Freddy gets interested really fast! After all, sharks are his favorite thing in the world, and that's a pretty cool jersey. Freddy sure would like to have one. Unfortunately, so would Max Sellars, the first grade's biggest bully. But there's only one spot left on the team! Try-outs are Saturday, and Jessie has promised to help Freddy get into shape by then. The stakes are high. If Freddy can't beat Max on the ice, it might be more than just his lunch that gets smashed! Abby Klein's quick-paced book presents a realistic look at school and family life. The finale of this fourth book in the "Ready, Freddy!" series is a little too neat and easy, but the book is enjoyable nevertheless. This should be a good conversation-starter for parents or teachers who want to talk to children about bullying. 2005, Blue Sky/Scholastic, Ages 7 to 10.
