Overview

A nice, straightforward set of jazz from Jersey drummer Bruce Jackson. The repertoire is largely modern ('60s and forward, at least), but with a piece or two from the Great American Songbook thrown in. The pieces selected are generally good showcases for drummers, with a couple of Wayne Shorter works, a Tony Williams number, and Monk's perfect "Rhythm-A-Ning." Jackson takes advantage of what each piece gives him to work with, pounding out some nice solos when his time comes. Unfortunately, it's difficult to lead a jazz trio from the drums, and pianist Bob Himmelberger takes much of the spotlight throughout the album, particularly when Jackson is in more of an accompaniment mode, using brushes for effect. Himmelberger shows a nice sensitivity to the notes and makes each number his own, with Nick Bayak providing an able bass accompaniment and Jackson hiding behind the rest of the sounds until his solo comes. The trio works quite well, and can play off one another decently. Each performer appears to be particularly good alone, but the sound can become a little muddled from time to time. The song choices are good, the playing is good, but it would have been nice to be able to hear more from Jackson in there.
