Overview

Spunky English girl overcomes impossible odds and outsmarts heathen villains.

That's the headline when Zoe Lexham returns to England. After twelve years in the exotic east, she's shockingly adept in the sensual arts. She knows everything a young lady shouldn't and nothing she ought to know. She's a walking scandal, with no hope of a future . . . unless someone can civilize her.

Lucien de Grey, the Duke of Marchmont, is no knight in shining armor. He's cynical, easily bored, and dangerous to women. He charms, seduces, and leaves them—with parting gifts of expensive jewelry to dry their tears. But good looks, combined with money and rank, makes him welcome everywhere. The most popular bachelor in the Beau Monde can easily save Zoe's risquÉ reputation . . . if the wayward beauty doesn't lead him into temptation, and a passion that could ruin them both.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Kidnapped as a preteen while on a trip to Egypt, Zoe Octavia Lexham escapes after 12 years in a harem and returns to her family only to confront social censure. It is childhood friend Lucien de Grey, Duke of Marchmont, who comes to her aid. Always a hoyden, the now sensually trained but still virgin Zoe is a seductive force to be reckoned with, and while Lucien feels honor-bound to take her under his wing, he soon becomes as captivated with her behavior as he is annoyed. VERDICT Chase (Your Scandalous Ways) has created another unconventional, thoroughly delightful heroine, provided her with a hero worthy of the title, and added enough scandal and outrageous fun to keep the pages turning. A longtime and well-deserved favorite of historical romance fans, Chase lives in Worchester, MA.

Meet the Author

After a heroic attempt to be an English major forever, Loretta Chase stoically accepted her degree but kept on reading and writing. As well as working in academe, she had an enlightening, if brief, life in retail and a Dickensian six-month experience as a meter maid. In the course of moonlighting as a corporate video scriptwriter, she succumbed to the charm of a producer, who lured her into writing novels . . . and marrying him. The union has resulted in what seems like an awful lot of books and quite a few awards, including the Romance Writers of America's RITA®.

    an enjoyable Regency romance

Twelve year old Zoe Lexham disappears while on a family trip to the Middle East. She spent years in a harem after her father foolishly took the family on a tour of the dangerous Eastern Mediterranean and was abducted in Egypt; there she learned to speak openly and honestly about sex. When she finds her way home in 1818, Zoe knows she has no prospects for marriage; being too old and worse ultra scandalous.

Lord Lucien de Grey may be a shallow rake, but as a Duke with money he can go anywhere in the Beau Monde and thus he could help his childhood friend become accepted by those in Polite Society. However, Lucien is attracted to Zoe and though she reciprocates, she fears his reaction to learning what happened to her years ago even as the danger that exiled her has returned to complete the job.

DON'T TEMPT ME is an enjoyable Regency romance starring two fascinating lead protagonists. The roguish Lucien learned never become deeply attached to anyone especially avoiding love and passion when his parents died when he was ten years old; he knows love hurts. Zoe realizes that scandal is her rightful name having spent years in a harem and learned (by osmosis) about sex; ironically the men want her because she is beautiful and assumed to be an expert in the boudoir, but has a secret that would stun any who ever found out though none except her beloved stand a chance. Fans will enjoy Lucien's chase of Zoe whose reputation is to bolt into trouble.

Don't Tempt Me A Must Read

Twelve years ago Zoe Octavia Lexham was kidnapped while with her parents in Egypt. Now having escaped the haram she back with her family. After many young women claimed to be Zoe Lexham, the Duke of Marchmont, Lucien de Gray, is going to check her out. Zoe is surrounded by her family, Lucien knows just by looking at her the this is the little girl who terrorized him as a boy. Now it's his job to make her popular. It's hard, because Zoe now knows things that a proper young lady of twenty four shouldn't know.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I loved the plot and all the characters. I knew right off that Zoe and Lucian were meant for eachother, when she turned into a she devil after he said something about her.

    Must Buy!

I loved the twist of charismatic Zoe being kidnapped and enslaved in a harem learning erotic arts, yet remaining innocent for twelve years. I especially loved how she was able to bring the light back to the tormented, charming, and wicked Lucien. This book is not only a must read but a must buy. I can't wait to read more from this author.

    great read

This was one of those books that was hard to put down. There were a few slow parts but in all a great read. the characters both had that something that made the story more fun to read. I always like fun characters and this had it.

    I Also Recommend:

    Another excellent read from LC

Chase is my favorite romance author. She clearly is bored with predictable vapid heroines--her recent novels have persuaded us to root for a scandalous widow, a maiden with an illegitimate child, a courtesan, and now an escapee from a harem! As always, the hero is dashing and handsome, but with a touch of pathos in his history. This book also provides a nice picture of some regency era court protocols that I haven't really seen in any other books. The writing is sharp and intellengent.

    Fun story

I read this on a cross-country flight and had a great time with it. The story is a bit implausible but it was still fun to read. I had a smile on my face many times as Zoe would get the best of Marchmont. The story centers on the return of Zoe, a willful young girl, captured and kept in a harem for years, who escapes and returns to England a women. Marchmont is, of course, handsome, wealthy and a leader of the Ton. Zoe's father, Lexham, had been Marchmont's guardian after his parents and then his brother died. He feels he owes Lexham so he agrees to introduce Zoe into Society, even getting her introduced to the Queen so that she can find a husband. Although he does just that, it is the journey to that point that is fun.

Unexpected enjoyment on a rainy day

I do not believe that I have ever read Loretta Chase before today. I can truly say that I enjoyed Don't Tempt Me tremendously. I did not put the book down. Despite the improbable storyline, which made me trepidant at first, the story was passionate. Obviously, I highly recommend it.
