Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This addition to the series about Tilly and her friends begins when Doodle the alligator wakes up feeling "BITEY!" She chomps breakfast, chews on the mail, and munches on the sofa. But when she bites Tumpty the elephant's bottom, it is clear she has gone too far. Tumpty stomps Doodle's tail. Tilly, the young girl with the anthropomorphic friends, tells Tumpty that the tail-stomping was not a nice thing to do. Both animals are now in tears; even Hector the pig is crying. Along comes bird Pru with a first-aid kit to bandage Doodle's tail, give Tumpty an "extra-large bandage for his bottom," and even bandage Hector and Tiptoe, too. After Pru kisses everyone better, Tumpty and Doodle apologize to each other and everyone is happy again. To be careful, however, Doodle gets a special bandage around her jaw. "No more bitey bitey!" she is told. The rather slight story needs no settings; the illustrations of the characters alone are sufficient to provide the humor. Black lines define them; mixed media colors fill in their personalities. Emotions are exaggerated, between tears and broad smiles, in this behavior lesson for the very young. I Also Recommend:

An underrated gem of a series

This series is THE PERFECT read for children in the 2-3 year-old age range, and this is my favorite book in the series. Rarely have I seen such an elegant portrayal of what happens when one friend hurts another after he has been hurt himself. Although this series may appear simplistic, these books are actually masterpieces of subtlety and great design. Tilly's world perfectly captures the toddler zeitgeist where small moments comprise the entire universe, and where each interaction can become a moral milestone. We use these books everyday with our three year-old to frame ideas like friendship, fairness, feelings, and kindness. We have given the whole set to our daughter's preschool, and my husband uses them all year in his junior kindergarten classroom. I can't recommend them highly enough.
