Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Full of outlined cartoons of animals, perky plants, and a few people (including monsters and a baker), this volume of the "Doodles" series can be a handbook for parents who want to begin teaching their young children the alphabet. The first six pages offer dotted lines to follow, giving the beginner a chance to get used to holding a pencil and drawing different kinds of lines with it. From then on, each letter (lower case) gets two pages, so kids can trace it several times and then use its shape to complete a picture, also by tracing dots. Phonetics are demonstrated with three words beginning with each letter to be traced and spoken aloud. At the end, two spreads offer more practice in tracing the letters to fill in an ocean scene and a garden scene. The last one uses capitals, though rather abruptly introduced; presumably parents would need to devise some practice pages of their own to explain these. Meyers' outline drawings are simple but fun, especially: a group of posing dogs, the French baker decorating a huge cake, and three mischievous-looking camels. For kids who like to color, these would be enjoyable subjects, though not necessary for learning the alphabet. A final page advises parents to be patient with beginners at holding a pencil (a picture shows the correct hand position) and not to forget demonstrating the appropriate position for left-handers.
