Overview

Nearly two decades after their predecessors first started assaulting dinosaur-rock's fortress with a three-chords-and-a-cloud-of-dust attack, this young, loud, and snotty Bay Area trio conquered the charts without compromising their punk approach one whit. Thanks in part to the fine-tuned songcraft and heartfelt angst of frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day touched a nerve with millions of disaffected suburbanites -- not to mention urbanites and rural denizens. Songs such as "Longview" and "Basket Case" filter Green Day's influences -- poppier first-wave punk acts like the Buzzcocks and the Undertones -- through a decidedly modern American worldview, one that's both pissed and resigned, full of protest but not averse to a hearty laugh. More than their prior indie releases, Dookie focused the trio's energies, sharpening the fangs of gnashing songs such as "Burnout" and "F.O.D." while using a lighter hand to underscore the genuine emotionalism of finger-poppers such as "When I Come Around." Some people insist that punk died in the late 1970s, but Green Day's remarkable resuscitation proves it was only sleeping one off.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Green Day couldn't have had a blockbuster without Nirvana, but Dookie wound up being nearly as revolutionary as Nevermind, sending a wave of imitators up the charts and setting the tone for the mainstream rock of the mid-'90s. Like Nevermind, this was accidental success, the sound of a promising underground group suddenly hitting its stride just as they got their first professional, big-budget, big-label production. Really, that's where the similarities end, since if Nirvana were indebted to the weirdness of indie rock, Green Day were straight-ahead punk revivalists through and through. They were products of the underground pop scene kept alive by such protagonists as All, yet what they really loved was the original punk, particularly such British punkers as the Jam and Buzzcocks. On their first couple records, they showed promise, but with Dookie, they delivered a record that found Billie Joe Armstrong bursting into full flower as a songwriter, spitting out melodic ravers that could have comfortable sat alongside Singles Going Steady, but infused with an ironic self-loathing popularized by Nirvana, whose clean sound on Nevermind is also emulated here. Where Nirvana had weight, Green Day are deliberately adolescent here, treating nearly everything as joke and having as much fun as snotty punkers should. They demonstrate a bit of depth with "When I Come Around," but that just varies the pace slightly, since the key to this is their flippant, infectious attitude -- something they maintain throughout the record, making Dookie a stellar piece of modern punk that many tried to emulate but nobody bettered.

This is a great album that really put Green Day in the spotlight and made them very popular. There are three standout songs (Basket Case, Longview, When I Came Around), and one thing I like about this album is that the songs that you haven't heard blared on the radio 12,000 times can stand own their own. Everything is pretty solid, even if there are a couple songs in there that didn't really do anything for me. It's a great album, but I would say it is a bit overrated.

If you're a punk and haven't heard this CD -do youself favour and go buy it. Jus' having a listen to this album is not enough. Buy it. The amazing riffs combined with the brilliance that is Billie Joe's lyrics create a brilliant CD that is not to be missed. Look out for ''Longview'', ''In The End'' and the secret track ''All By Myself'' - a joke song recorded by the bands drummer, Tre Cool.

Words can't describe this CD. It is simply amazing. This is by far Green Day's best CD and that is saying alot because all of there other CD's are good to. Green Day has gone hardcore with this title and it worked. Time Magazine said it is was the best Rock CD of 1994. How about one of the best of the decade period. I am not kinding when I say that either. There guitar music is amazing, and the lyrics kick a** to. Some of the best tracks on this CD are all of them but I will just name a few. They are ''Burnout'', ''Having A Blast'', ''Longview'', ''Welcome To Paradise'', ''Basket Case'', ''When I Come Around'', ''Coming Clean'', ''Emenius Sleepus'', and F.O.D.(Don't ask what that stands for kiddies). Tracks 11 and 12, ''Coming Clean'' and ''Emenius Sleepus'' are less than two minutes long, but awesome guitar riffs take care of that! Do Yourself a favor and buy this CD, don't just ''Check It Out''!

This is one of my favorite Green Day CDs out there. It has some of their older "classic" songs, like When I come Around, and Having a Blast. If you want a toe-tapping head-bopping good CD you can hum later, and enjoy getting it stuck in your head, then you'll want this CD! This one's up there with American Idiot and Wake Me Up When September Ends!

There is absolutely no excuse not to own this cd if you even remotely like Green Day, the bands that they've influenced, or basically any modern rock. There's 5 "radio hits" on it- "Longview," "When I come Around," "Basketcase," "Welcome to Paradise," and "She." Plus, every other song is great. Maybe I have a biased view, but I think that this cd is impossible not to like for its witty lyrics that speak out to the American youth (even ten years after the album's release.) The only bad thing about it is that it's not longer.

This is the album that made Green Day big names. I love this album to listen to, espically to go back and listen to. It is very upbeat and rocks. It rules. It had MTV hits like ''Long View'', ''Welcome To Paradise'', ''Basket Case'', ''When I Come Around'', & ''She''. It also has classics like ''Burn Out'' & ''F.O.D.''. It is a all-time great classic.

Green Day is most likely the best band ever. Billie Joe Armstrong is brilliant cuz he can transform a 3 chord song into a masterpeice. Thank God for Green Day. This band helped me out when I thought I couldn't make it.

If you haven't heard of green day this is the album to start with, if you've heard of them then why haven't you got it already? If your interested in any punk music this a must have. Favourite tracks (hard to pick between them) include ''Having a blast'', ''Longview'', ''Welcome to paradise'', ''FOD'' and of course ''Basket case'', but they're all brilliant.
